CASE STUDY 1
Sandro Lacson, a 65 years old businessman, enjoys walking and riding a bike
together with his friends during weekends. He is married to his second wife who loves
shopping and travel. They have two young children, a daughter aged 5 and an 8-year-
old son. While trekking on a hill, he suffered an unexpected and sudden stroke. He did
not know that he had hypertension because he did not get yearly checkups. He woke up
in the hospital bed to find that he could not move his hand. He was not able to care for
himself or even turn himself without assistance. His body image has dramatically
changed from that of a man of strength to that of a helpless individual.
The nurse recognizes that changes in the health status often result in stressors
that affect a person’s self-concept. Such stressors influence a person’s ability to interact
with others and to function effectively. Knowledge of self-concept will aid in identifying
stressors that affect Mr. Lacson and in promoting effective planning to support his
growth and adaption to change.
Questions:
1. As a nurse, what stressors would you identify that affect Mr. Lacson’s self-
concept?
In Mr. Lacson’s situation he experiences a change in his health and at the same
time change in his social interaction where it can affect his self-esteem. As a nurse,
body image and depression is the stressors that I identify that affects Mr. Lacson’s self-
concept, since he suffered an unexpected and sudden stroke where body image can
affect his self-esteem lead to depression and it is a risk factor that leaves one
vulnerable to health problems whereas higher self-esteem and strong relationships
support good health. Illness and hospitalization is one of the stressors that can affect
Mr. Lacson’s self-concept and he might think a negative perceptions in his self-such
statements as “I’m a burden to my family” and in this matter, a person like him may
affect the way he care for himself physically, emotionally and how he care for others.
2. How would you address those stressors? what copping strategies would
you apply?
Stressful situations not only drain energy but can also alter perspective. And
changes in personality and attitudes - which sometimes accompany stroke, can be
stressful and difficult to accept. In a case of Mr. Lacson the most drastic way to address
those stressors is encourage Mr. Lacson to ask help or assist, develop more skills to
give him confidence and energy in coping with unavoidable pressures. After a stroke,
even simple actions may become more difficult and time consuming, so allow extra
time. Remember to delegate, prioritise, plan and be prepared to compromise
Remember to value exercise and a healthy diet. As well as helping keep him fit,
exercise is a good way to work off tension. Being physical creates a feeling of wellbeing
due to the release of chemicals in the body such as eating fresh foods and a balanced
diet is also important to keep healthy. Try to avoid too much of those foods that cause
tension and stress, such as coffee, tea, chocolate and soft drinks. Learn to accept what
you cannot change. Try humour because laughter reduces stress and tension.

-Define and state the limits of desired BP. Explan hypertension and its effect on the
heart, blood vessels, kidney, and brain
-Assist the patient in identifying modifiable risk factors lice diet high in sodham,
saturated fats and cholesterol
-Encourage patient to decrease or eliminate caffeine like in tea, coffee, cola and
chocolates. Stress importance of accomplishing daily rest periods.
