Topic - Same Sex Unions

Scripture

Holy Bible, New International Version. Chicago, IL: Biblica, 2011.

“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:
Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men” (1
Cor. 6:9)

This passage clearly states that men who have sex with men are commiting a wrongdoing, as
are idolaters and adulterers. This is a clear indication that this particular scripture condemns
homosexual acts and this act is not aligned with the actions of those that follow God.

“Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a
woman.” But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with
his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.” (1 Cor. 7:1-2)

This passage does not explicitly mention homosexuality but it mentions that sex should be done
between those that have partaken in marriage. This therefore connects passages relating to
same sex sexual relations with marriage. Sexual relations are meant to be had between a
married man and woman. Therefore both moral sexual relations and marriage cannot be
enjoyed by homosexuals because they do not fulfill the fundamental requirement to be a pair
consisting of a man and a woman.

“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one
flesh.” (Gen. 2:24)

This passage talks about marriage as the union strictly between man and woman. The text does
not use vague descriptions such as two people but explicitly states the man and the woman.

“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and
subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature
that moves on the ground.” (Gen. 1:28)

This passage provides insight on God’s view on the nature of marriage. Marriage is a sacred
union between man and woman who in time fulfill God’s mission of bringing new life to Earth.
Biologically speaking life can only arise from the union between man and woman.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been
born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7)

This blanket statement in the Bible tells us believers to love one another. There is no mention of
not loving sinners or those that commit wrongdoings.

“Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.” (Lev.
18:22)

This passage clearly refers to the condemnation of same sex sexual relations. It is an order, and
not merely a suggestion, to abstain from such detestable acts.

“‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your
neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” (Lev. 19:18)

The Lord tells us not to bear a grudge against anyone but to instead love others you would love
yourself. It is worth noting that this is in the same book, Leviticus, that homosexuality is
explained as wrong.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Pet. 4:8)

Indeed humans can find witness fellow humans committing sins, but the scripture shows that
despite finding these faults there must be love among brothers and sisters through Christ.

“For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft,
murder,” (Mark 7:21)

This passage speaks of sexual immorality as an act of evil. The passage itself however does
not go into detail as to what this sexual immorality pertains to exactly. From the previous
passages from Genesis, it can be inferred that this is in relation to sexual intercourse outside
the sacred union of marriage.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is
patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Pet.
3:9)

This passage states that God does not want sinners to perish but instead to repent. God is
forgiving and we as His followers should not condemn to death those that sin.

“Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural
sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations
with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with
other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” (Rom. 1:26-27)

The previous passages focused on homosexual relations between men. This passage makes
clear that the Bible teaches homosexual relations between women are also deemed
unacceptable. Therefore it can be reasonably assuming that it is as a whole, and not only for
male homosexual relations, that the Bible does not approve of such.

Church Teachings

Catechism of the Catholic Church. 2nd ed. Vatican City: Vatican Press, 1997.
http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm.

“The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not
negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial.
They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust
discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in

their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties
they may encounter from their condition.” (CCC #2358)

The Church recognizes the multitudes of people, including Christians, that have homosexual
tendencies. The Church does not call for their discrimination but instead for treatment with
compassion. However, the Church is still clear that this inclination is disordered and not what
God intends.

“Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner
freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace,
they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.” (CCC #2359)

Homosexuals are still able to live virtuous lives and approach Christian perfection. Like all of
God’s children, homosexuals are called to a life of chastity.

“The spouses’ union achieves the twofold end of marriage: the good of the spouses themselves
and the transmission of life. These two meanings or values of marriage cannot be separated
without altering the couple’s spiritual life and compromising the goods of marriage and the future
of the family.”(CCC #2363)

The Church describes two purposes of marriage, for the good of the husband and wife as well
as for the transmission of life. These two are inseparable and trying to do so would compromise
the goods of marriage and the future of the family. Therefore when marriage is attempted
outside of these two ends, marriage as God has intended is not fulfilled.

“Everyone, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity. Physical,
moral, and spiritual difference and complementarity are oriented toward the goods of marriage
and the flourishing of family life. The harmony of the couple and of society depends in part on
the way in which the complementarity, needs, and mutual support between the sexes are lived
out.”(CCC #2333)

The Church reiterates that man and woman are different but made to complement each other,
particularly in marriage and family life. This complementary nature is not only good for their
marriage but for society as a whole. It is through this institution of marriage and family that God
has intended that society thrives.

Elie, Paul. Pope Francis Supports Same-Sex Civil Unions. but the Church must do more. New York,
The NewYorker, 2020. https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/pope-francis-supports-
same-sex-civil-unions-but-the-church-must-do-more.

“In the film, Francis is then heard saying, “Homosexual people have a right to be in the family.
They are children of God. They have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out of the
family or made miserable over this. What we have to make is a law of civil coexistence, for they
have the right to be legally covered. I stood up for that.””

Pope Francis has made several remarks supporting same-sex civil unions, including in a press
conference, as well as in the documentary titled, “Francesco.” A distinction, however, has to be
made between the civil union of same-sex couples, and their sexual relations with each other.
Pope Frances supports allowing same-sex couples to be legally recognized as to allow them to
build their own families and to have the same benefits provided by the state to opposite sex

couples. Despite this, the Pope and the Church remains firmly against homosexual acts,
distinguishing gay people themselves (should be accepted) and their behavior towards
expressing their sexuality. This distinction calls for a reassessment of how the Church should
recognize gay people.

“The study also considers common arguments for and against SSM and likely changes in laws
and policies that may occur.”

The authors, Chamie and Mirkin, believe that same-sex marriage (SSM) is an issue beyond the
homosexuality of individuals. They stated in their article that the phenomenon of SSM is
relatively new and may undergo several years of development and debate. The authors chose
to focus on societal implications of SSM, instead of the controversial sexuality of individuals.
One of the main arguments that support SSM was that same-sex partners should also enjoy the
same societal benefits that heterosexual couples enjoy, including the basic human right of
choosing who they want to be with. Those against SSM, however, argue that this phenomenon
has implications for both the state or country in which it will be legalized, as well as the welfare
of the children, if any are adopted. In summary, the article recognizes the many implications of
SSM, both good and bad, and the intensity of these implications, both locally and globally.

Cort, Helen. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS AND MARRIAGE. 2020.

marriage/
“A civil partnership is a legal relationship entered into by a couple which is registered and
provides them with similar legal rights to married couples.”
Same sex unions are civil partnerships in which it may share legal rights that are similar to
married couples but marriage and unions are completely different. Marriage is formed by vows
whereas civil unions are formed by legal documents.

Gnuse, Robert. Seven Gay Texts: Biblical Passages Used to Condemn Homosexuality. Biblical
Theology Bulletin. 2015. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0146107915577097

“The author believes that these do not refer to homosexual relationships between two free,
adult, and loving individuals. They describe rape or attempted rape (Genesis 9:20-27, 19:1-11),
cultic prostitution (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13), male prostitution and pederasty (1 Corinthians 6:9-10;
1 Timothy 1:10), and the Isis cult in Rome (Romans 1:26-27). If the biblical authors did assume
homosexuality was evil, we do not theologize off of their cultural assumptions, we theologize off
of the texts we have in the canon. The author attempts to introduce some new arguments into
this long-standing and passionate debate.”

According to the author, there are seven most commonly used scripture passages to condemn
homosexuality, namely, (1) Noah and Ham, (2) Sodom and Gomorrah, (3 & 4) Levitical laws, (5
& 6) Second Testament vice lists, and (7) Paul’s letter to the Romans. Paul’s letters to the
Romans wherein it talks about same sex activity by both men and women. The author wants to

observe whether they really condemn homosexual behavior between two consenting, free
adults, or whether some other form of activity is being described. In Noah and Ham, people
believed that what Ham did to his father, Noah, was an act of homosexuality, leading to the
curse of Canaan, the son of Ham. The author believes that instead of homosexuality, the
passage should be seen as condemning the act of rape and incest, stating that the activity was
done by Ham to humiliate his father. In the same way, the author views the narrative of Sodom
and Gomorrah as a condemnation of the act of rape, stating that the narratives focused on the
subordination of the strangers, instead of homosexuality. The author goes on, giving different
interpretations for these Biblical passages and countering the traditional views and arguments
for them.

Unions in the United States. United States of America, Socius. 2019.
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/2378023119829312

“Indeed, same-sex couples face a variety of stressors that are absent in male-female
relationships, such as managing disclosure of sexual orientation as well as minority stresses
stemming from sexual identity. These factors have been found to influence stress within
relationships as well as perceived relationship quality.”

“These differential pressures on same-sex unions by gender may also include differentials in
perceived barriers to union dissolution by gender in which female-female couples may not only
be more weakly selected into formal unions but may also see the union as less permanent or
easier to leave, as evidenced by findings from male-female relationships in which females were
more likely to express dissatisfaction within the relationship or request divorce.”

This journal focuses on the stability of the same sex and opposite sex relationship. With the use
of How Couples Meet and Stay Together survey, the researchers were able to gather data that
suggests indistinguishable dissolution rates among all gender compositions and that female to
female relationships have a higher risk of dissolution than male to male and male to female
relationships. The general culture especially those in the lesbian facet of the LGBT community
perceive these formal unions as less permanent than their gay and heterosexual counterparts.

Peters, Edward. 'Same-sex marriage' and 'same-sex unions' are not the same things. 2017.
https://www.catholicworldreport.com/2017/09/13/same-sex-marriage-and-same-sex-
unions-are-not-the-same-things/

“Same-sex marriage and same-sex unions were distinguishable phenomena, and that CDF was
wrong to require Catholics to oppose legal recognition of ‘same-sex unions’”

The Church was wrong to confuse same sex unions with same sex marriage as the two are
different things. Marriage pertains to two people, particularly a man and a woman, that are
blessed under the sacrament of matrimony. Whereas a union could mean several things, some
could be biologically determined such as parent-child or siblings or something casual like
friendship or teammates.

“Americans' attitudes toward same-sex unions are undergoing dramatic change. The tide has
clearly turned toward equality in marriage rights for gays and lesbians both in the minds
Americans and in the judicial and legislative bodies of government at the federal, state, and
community level.”

The journal emphasizes that Christian nationalists see gays and lesbians as out-groups and
same-sex unions as a threat to their sense of self and community. Furthermore, the journal has
given the implications of this study for future research on political and religious identities and
intolerance toward socially marginalized populations. With further research, it shows that
Christian nationalism is unrelated to support for both same-sex marriage and unions.

Answers About Marriage and Same-Sex Unions. United States of America. 2003.
https://www.usccb.org/committees/promotion-defense-marriage/between-man-and-
woman-questions-and-answers-about-marriage

“Marriage comes from the loving hand of God, who fashioned both male and female in the
divine image (see Gen. 1:27). A man "leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and
the two of them become one body" (Gen. 2:24).”

Marriage is commonly known as a union between a man and a woman. Furthermore, it is within
the laws of nature that a man and woman are complementary partners for the creation of life in
which is one of the fundamental purposes of marriage. With this reason, same sex union
contradicts the nature of marriage and will never be equivalent to it since it cannot cooperate the
fact of creating new life. However, through law, it makes same sex unions permissible and
acceptable.
