Introduction

CSTR Reactor ( continues stirred reactor) is a vessel which reactants are added
and products formed while the contents within the vessel are vigorously stirred
using internal agitation or by internally ( or externally ) recycling the contents.
CSTR used in biological processes in many industries, such as brewing and waste
treatments.

Figure 1: CSTR reactor

In this experiment, the base NaOH and ethyl acetate was used as a reactants to
form sodium acetate and ethanol in CSTR reactor. This experment shows the
difference between PH when volumetric flow rate was changed.

Equation 1 :The reaction of this experment

This experment is aimed to determine the order of the reaction (n) with using a
(CSTR) reactor by using sodium oxide and ethyl acetate as a reactant which
produce ethanol and sodium acetate .In this experiment the relationship between
flow rate and PH was studied, when the flow rate of NaOH increased the PH
increased, so the rate of reaction was increased .
When the flow rate of NaOH and ethyl acetate were found this equation was used
to find out the value of order of reaction (n)

-rA = k CAn Equation 2 :Rate of reaction

Where
rA : Rate of reaction
CA : concentration of NaOH
n : the order of reaction
K : rate constant

So
•Slope = n
•Intercept = ln (K)
Procedure

At first we turned on the device, then we started controlling the flow rate of
sodium oxide and ethyl acetate . first it was studied when the flow rate increased
for all the reactants (sodium oxide and ethyl acetate ) and then it was studied
when the flow rate of sodium oxide was constant and the flow rate of ethyl
acetate was changed .
In first part the relationship between Ln (-rA) an Ln (CA) was drawn so the slope
equal the order of this reaction .
In the second part , noticed that the NaOH concentration is very important, since
the pH value decreased when the value of ethyl acetate flow rate increased (with
constant NaOH concentration )

Results and Discussions

In this experiment, the base NaOH and ethyl acetate was used as a
reactants to form sodium acetate and ethanol in CSTR reactor .Results in
table 1 shows the difference between PH when volumetric flow rate was
changed.
Table 1: Raw data of the experament

T=22 °C
 NaOH CH3COOC2H5 pH at steady-state
mL/min mL/min value
50 50 12.52
100 100 12.53
150 150 12.54
200 200 12.55

From table (1), we noticed that when the volumetric flowrate increased, the
rate of reaction was increased.

Table 2 : results and values that calculated

-3.3617
200 200 12.55 0.03548 0.02580 -3.6570 -3.3387
we can determine the value of Ln (K) and n by plotting ln (-rA) and ln (CA),
which appears in figure (2)

Ln (CA)

Ln(-ra)

Figure 2: The relationship between ln (CA) and ln (-rA)

n = 1.9301
Ln (k) = 3.2132 → K = 24.8585 mole / L .S-1
The table below shows the results when the flow rate of NaOH was constant
and shows that the PH decreases so the rate of reaction decreases.
