ACTIVITY 3.

* Two positive lessons we can learn from cultural relativism.

a. It warns us from assuming that our preferences are the absolute rational standard.

example: realization that your cultures, practices are not the best, considering other peoples belief and
practices.

b. It teaches us to keep an open mind and to be more amenable in discovering the truth.

example: thinking rational, always doing research, investigations before giving an assumptions.
* Reasons why cultural relativism is not plausible

In my opinion and understanding about this lesson, cultural relativism is not plausible because it is
dominantly subjective, it was literally explained that in a specific society's culture and practices of what
is moral, good actions and bad actions cannot be judge by other societies culture and practices.

* Give three strengths and weaknesses of the Filipino character

Strengths

a. Pakikipagkapwa-Tao

example: high level of hospitability to visitors or foreign people.

b. Family Orientation

example: it is a default practice that we should have a good relationship with our family members.

c. Joy and Humor

example: able to smile and find happiness from calamities and accidents.

Weaknesses

a. Lack of Discipline

example: This is very common to parents who are not very good in handling their children's personally
and negative behaviors.
b.Kanya-Kanya Syndrome

example: this is contradiction to family orientation where in a certain family unity cannot be seen.

c.Lack of Self-Analysis and Self-Reflection

example: Filipino people usually have hard time realizing their own mistakes and learn from it.

Assessment

1. Culture plays a vital role in the development of every individual, it does not only focus on the
behavior, manner but the overall lifestyle of a person living in a society.

The culture from which place you are born at it what makes you as a person in the society, it can be
crucial because let say you are born in a society where killing lives is acceptable in a sense that killing
other lives can save the overall population of the society, by this the more mature you become you will
understand that this practice is considered "good" by judging from your cultural aspects. However in
some countries in their culture this can be seen as crime or an evil doing if judge from the perspective of
other cultures. If you are a teenage who just barely reached on maturity stage you will be confused why
other people got angry on your society's practice of killing other people's lives when you are doing this
to save the many.

It is important to understand the culture and practices of other society on different races, different
nationality. Going deep on the cultures of other people can benefit your cognitive thinking and mental
capacity rather than just sticking to what you learned from your own community. Hence, in my opinion
this is how culture shape human behavior.

2. Filipino people's common characters are friendly, courteous, good natured, sharing, hard worker,
hospitable, thrifty, sincere, religious, resilience, joyful, casual, clever, creative and resourceful. These
Filipino characters mentioned are positive ones as you can see, however ofcourse there are negative
ones.

Strengths and weaknesses are also present in these Filipino characters, the most commons strenghts of
these characters are, high level of positivity, some of the strenghts are:

* Positivity of Filipino characters are dominant over negativities.

example: resilience, the ability to recover fast from calamities, only few races have this kind of
characteristic.

* Filipino characters identiified are very interactive that promotes socialization.

example: hospitable, friendly, foreign people find these characterisitics advantage to them when they
visit in our country because the people are very open and welcome to new set of visitors.

Weaknesses:

* Filipino characteristics are overly positive to which there are no rooms for criticism.

example: criticizing the work of others would be seen as negative to the point of view of the owner
without considering the value of criticism.

* Filipino parents are not very open to their own children

example: lack of awareness of the sexual self, sexual related topics. Children most often learn these
things from school or related organizations but not from home.

3. Filipino culture focus more on improving the positive traits present in cultural practices, but what is
bad is that they forgot to adapt changes and accept new practices to improve the overall perspective of
life aspects.

In my honest observation of the influence of Filipino culture of today's generation on how students look
at moral experience and solve moral dilemmas, is more on bad influence rather than good, student
teenagers are most likely suffering from these bad influences of Filipino culture. Teenage pregnancy rate
is increasing even though there different programs conducted from different parts of the country about
ASRH (Adolescence Sexual Reproductive Health) and other related programs, the reason is that prior
from these lectures we should've learned these things from our parents at home and the problem is that
family are not very open to topics like these. The next one that has one of the biggest impacts of today's
student situations are mental health awareness, as usual outside from home - in school, out of school
youth organizations mental health problems are very open and people are aware of how difficult of a
person that have are diagnosed to these illnes, but again at home most common cases is that parents
are not very open to mental health problems, specially old ones that still stick to old beliefs such as
supernatural, ghost, posession that if someone are having hallucinations due to anxiety or anxiousness,
a parent will bring his/her child immediately to a quack doctor rather than get treated mentally from
experts. The point is that from these influences students are most likely could not focus to improve their
outlook in moral experiences because of these impacts, specially from solving moral dilemmas that are
not taugh to us when we are young on how to think rational and consider other factors outside the
situations. Learning and knowledge came from our parents, without being taught well will be reflected
later on when we became adults.

These assumptions are purely from my observations and awareness from social media issues and news,
the fact that we are in a state of calamity due to the Covid outbreak from 2019 that what makes these
issues very crucial.

4. My way of making decisions are based on consideration of first my family's good condition, I don't
really care of how others think of me as a person, am I bad for them? or am I good? I don't really care
because I have self awareness, I only focus on my aims to achieve at a certain situations.
As I read carefully and assess my self progression of Moral Development, I strongly think that I am in
level 2: Conventional level - stage 4 law and order orientation. I believe that it si our responsibility to
know the rules, police, law that are running in our country, because "ignorance of the excuses no one"
as they say, ofcourse it is understandable that you abide the law in order to get away with the negative
consequences and punishments, however it is not the case, you need to value it order to understand
that abiding the law is a way for you to help your country and yourself as well.
