Dear Reader,

I love Nature – and I am certainly not the only one. We enjoy Nature and we can find relaxation, tranquility and
inspiration here. Symrise brings you closer to Nature in your day-to-day life: with our extensive BOTANICALS collection
of natural ingredients for beauty and care.

You would be amazed to know just how frequently you can come into contact with our Botanicals – and thus with valuable
ingredients from all over the world. Shea butter is one of them. Known as “women’s gold” in its native Africa, shea butter
has been traditionally used in skin care for centuries. Today, shea butter enhances modern body creams all over the world
for skin that is wonderfully soft and supple.

Ginger root is a popular and esteemed ingredient in Asian cooking and medicine; in our Botanicals, we capture its
beneficial effects for use in skin care. In products like after-shave balms ginger is able to soothe irritated skin. Rooibos
from South Africa has been proven to protect the color of hair and shows also anti-aging and skin soothing properties.
Aloe vera, translated literally, means “effective cure”, and is a modern classic and rightly a sought-after ingredient for
skin care products. In after-sun products, especially, you can enjoy its cooling, moisturizing effect.

But you can also encounter fruits among our Botanicals: tropical passion fruit in shower gel, for instance, turns every
shower into a stimulating experience; and the Brazilian acai berry can be found in products like shampoos because
of its smoothing, protecting and nurturing properties.

Actipone®
The Actipone® range consists of highly effective
plant extracts for skin and hair care and covers
a variety of natural, mainly standardized products
with proven in-vitro efficacy confirmed by
Symrise’s R&D.
Extrapone®
Extrapone® is a range of aqueous glycolic
preparations of natural plant extracts, covering
a great variety of traditional and exotic plants.
Extrapone® GW
Extrapone® GW is a range of glycol-free products
based on glycerin and water. The glycerin is of
plant origin and proven to act as additional skin
moisturizing agent.
Extrapone® Milk
Symrise Extrapone® Milk offer a combination
of valuable milk components and natural plant
essences. The addition of Hydrolite® 5 and
vegetable glycerin provides an excellent long-
term moisturizing effect.
Flowerpone® /
Flowerconcentrole®
Without being a perfume, Flowerpone® and
Flowerconcentrole® provide an unobtrusive
smell in cosmetic products and are able to mask
base odors. The products are preservative-free
and contain bisabolol as a tracer.

film. Phytoconcentrole® are lipophilic plant
extracts based on triglycerides and with added

The Allplant Essence range consists of 99+%

The Indian Ayurveda philosophy came into being
about 5000 years ago. It aims at achieving psy-
chological and physical harmony. Using herbs,
flowers, essential oils and minerals, Ayurvedic
cosmetics bring the skin to its own perfect balan-
ce. For the selection of Ayurvedic plants such as
amla, noni, nutgrass, bel or Indian berberine,
Symrise cooperated with Dr. Chandrakant Basole,
an experienced consultant who studied Ayurvedic
medicine and is an expert in phyto medicine.
Chinese Mushrooms
Actipone®/Extrapone®
Chinese mushrooms are a key ingredient in
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Symrise
offers several varieties for the use in cosmetic
products, such as the famous shiitake, coriolus
also called “turkey tail”, or auricularia (wood
fungus or ear fungus, an allusion to its rubbery
ear-shaped growth); reishi, one of the oldest
mushrooms known to have been used in medicine,
and grifola frondosa, better known by its Japanese
name maitake – the “dancing mushroom”.

Extrapone®

In Africa the use of shea butter for skin care

Actipone®/ Extrapone®
The knowledge of herbs is deeply rooted in Traditi-
onal Chinese Medicine. More than 7000 types of
herbs with healing benefits have been documen-
ted for thousands of years. For the selection of
plants for the TCM collection, Symrise cooperated
with the experienced consultant Professor Guixin
of the Shanghai University of TCM. Learn about
the properties of angelica, ginger, honeysuckle,
licorice, pueraria and sophora – to name a few.

Actipone®
Wood is a popular natural and sustainable mate-
rial. Until today, it has been a symbol of strength,
naturalness and longevity. But wood is also an

ANTI-AGING
Glutathione
This cellular assay is performed with human
immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT).
The assay is based on the fluorometric
properties of monochlorobimane (mBCl). This
dye penetrates into living cells and reacts
with glutathione. A high amount of glutathione
leads to a high fluorometric signal.

Sirtuin
This cellular assay is performed with normal
human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF). An antibody,
that carries a fluorescent dye specifically binds
to the sirtuin protein. The amount of color is
proportional to the amount of sirtuin protein.

Collagen
This cellular test is performed with normal
human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF). The
assay is based on the dye Sirius red,
which specifically binds to the helical
structure of fibrillar collagen and can be
detected by photometric measurement.

IL-1 alpha
This cellular assay is performed with human
immortal keratinocytes (HaCaT). Cell lysates are
taken for the quantification of IL-1 alpha using
ELISA technique. IL-1 alpha content is detected
by photometric measurement.

COX-2
In this cell-free assay, the enzyme-activity of
cyclooxygenase-2 is used to convert arachidonic
acid to PGH2. Driven by this reaction, the co-
substrate ADHP is converted to the strongly
fluorescent product resorufine. The measured
content of resorufine is proportional to the
COX-2 activity.
PGE2
This cellular assay is performed with normal
human dermal keratinocytes (NHEK). Supernatants
are taken for the quantification of PGE2 using
competitive ELISA technique. PGE2 content is
detected by photometric measurement.
ANTIOXIDANT
DPPH
Based on the stable violet radical 2,2-diphenyl-
1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Reduction of this
radical by antioxidants results in decolorization
which can be measured spectrophotometrically.
ABTS
Based on the reduction of the relatively
stable blue/green 2,2‘-azinobis-(3-ethyl-
benzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) radical
cation. Antioxidants convert it into a
colorless product.

This cellular test is performed with normal
human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and is based
on the intracellular conversion of dichloro-
fluorescein diacetate (H2DCF-DA) into the
fluorescent dichlorofluorescein (DCF) in the
presence of reactive oxygen species.
HAIR COLOR PROTECTION
Colored hair strands are treated with the
dissolved active ingredient, dried and stressed
by UV irradiation. Then color protection is
calculated by comparison of the color before
and after stressing of the hair.
SKIN BRIGHTENING
Melanin
This cellular test is performed with B16V
mouse melanoma cells. After the lysis of the
cells the melanin content can be detected by
photometric measurement.
Tyrosinase
The assay is based on a controlled oxidation
of L-tyrosine to dopachrome by the enzyme
tyrosinase. The colored dopachrome can be
detected by photometric measurement.
SKIN FIRMING
Adipogenesis
Adipogenesis is performed on confluent 3T3-L1
preadipocytes. Using special differentiation
medium preadipocytes differentiate to adipo-
cytes. Formed lipid droplets can be stained
and measured using fluorescent Nile Red.
Lipogenesis
Based on the hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl-
oleate to 4-methylumbelliferon by lipase. The
fluorescent character of the product enables a
quantification of the lipase activity.
Lipolysis
Glycerol release is tested on confluent differen-
tiated 3T3-L1 cells. Glycerol of the supernatant
reacts to quinoneimine dye using some coupled
enzyme reactions. Increase of absorption is pro-
portional to the concentration of free glycerol.
