Introduction

0 Background of the Study

Batasan Hills is a barangay in Quezon City, Philippines. It contains the Batasan

Hill, formerly known as Constitution Hill. Atmospheric aerosols can affect the

2
earth's climate through both direct and indirect effects. They play important
roles in atmospheric radiation and climate change.

Among all of the anthropogenic aerosols, black carbon aerosols effectively

2
absorb solar radiation in the visible and infrared bands to heat the
atmosphere and affect the climate and air quality. The black carbon aerosol
concentration in the atmosphere has increased rapidly due to human use of
fossil fuels, agricultural and biological burning, and vehicle exhaust emissions. Figure 1. Black Carbon Emissions 2000-2090
Black carbon aerosols account for a small proportion of the atmospheric total
aerosols (usually several to ten-plus percent). Black carbon (BC) aerosol is the
dominant form of light absorbing particulate matter in the atmosphere.

0 Statement of the Problem

This topic aims to answer and analyze the Black carbon aerosols

2
in emitted Batasan Hills. The researcher aims to answer the

following questions:
1. Are Black carbon aerosols a potential factor for global

warming?

2
2. How does black carbon aerosol affect the environment?
3. What is the aftermath of black carbon aerosols to the human

health?

0 Significance of the Study

This study’s significance is the analyzation of the black carbon

2
aerosols emission and the knowledge about it being the

potential factor for global warning. The black carbon aerosol

concentration in the atmosphere has increased rapidly due to

human use of coal, oil, and other fossil fuels, agricultural and

2
biological burning, and vehicle exhaust emissions since the

industrial revolution.

This study will give analysis about the black carbon aerosols

significant effect in the environment and the aftermath of black

carbon aerosols to the human health.

0 Hypothesis

H0

2
Black carbon aerosols are potential factor for global warming.

Ha

The black carbon aerosols emissions have effects on the human health and the

2
environment.

Assumptions

The study will have the following assumptions:

1. The black carbon aerosols have a significant factor for the change of climate and global
warming.

2. Black carbon aerosols have a diverse impact on the human health and the
environment

0 Scope and Limitation

The scope of this study is to analyze and provide knowledge

2
about black carbon aerosols on how it can be a potential factor
for global warming. And the analysis of its diverse midst effects
to the human health and the environment.

2 This study’s limitation is that the only cope of this study is about
analyzation of black carbon aerosols. The researcher will not
use other factors in the experimentation and the gathering of
data.

0 RRL 1
Black carbon in soot is the dominant absorber of visible solar
radiation in the atmosphere. Anthropogenic sources of black

2
carbon are most concentrated in the tropics where solar
irradiance is highest. Black carbon deposition darkens snow
and ice surfaces, which can contribute to melting of Arctic sea
ice.

2 RRL 2
Black carbon aerosol plays a unique and important role in Figure 2. Black Carbon Emissions on Fossil Fuels
Earth's climate system. Black carbon is a type of carbonaceous
material with a unique combination of physical properties. The
main forcing terms are direct solar absorption, influence on
liquid, mixed phase, and ice clouds, and deposition on snow
and ice.

The incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon-containing
materials, such as fossil fuels, biofuels, and biomass, produces

2
black carbon (BC), a key component of atmospheric aerosols.
Since the industrial revolution, the concentration of BC aerosol
in the atmosphere has increased quickly due to human use of
coal, oil, and other fossil fuels, agricultural and biological

2 burning, and vehicle exhaust emissions.

Methodology

0 Research Design

The researcher will use Quantitative research for the study.

2
Quantitative research is the process of collecting and analyzing
numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and averages,
make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize
results to wider populations. The purpose of quantitative

2 research is to generate knowledge and create understanding

about the social world.

0 Materials and Methods

1. Collection of Materials
For this study the researcher will need Black carbon

2
aethalometer, The Black Carbon Photometer is a rugged,
portable, highly accurate and economical instrument for
measuring atmospheric black carbon particulates in polluted
urban environments. The BCP uses the simple and direct

2 technique of long-path photometry to quantify in real time the

total extinction and mass concentrations of particulates in the
aerosol (gas + particle) phase. This direct approach avoids the
artifacts and other issues associated with current commercially
available instruments, such as the most common current
technique of aethalometer that uses filters to pre-concentrate
samples for analysis.

0 2. Preparation of Set-ups
The preparation of set-ups will take place in IBP Road Overpass
Batasan Hills, Quezon City. There will be 3 set-ups, set-up A, set-up B,

2
and set-up C and will act as a controlled, independent, and
dependent variable for the study. The instrument will be place on the
ledge of the overpass while the data is being collected. The Black
carbon mass concentration for the aethalometer was derived from

2
the absorption measurement.
3. Preparation of Black Carbon Aethalometer The aethalometer will
be calibrated to expose black carbon aerosols. The filter tape in the
aethalometer was shifted automatically to expose a pristine spot on
the filter at the same time every eight hours to ensure that the two
sampling spots had a fixed starting and ending time of the sampling
for internal comparison. The in 10 internal timer and sampling flow
rate of the aethalometer were checked every week.

0 Data Collection

The researcher will gather data in IBP Road Overpass

2
Batasan Hills, Quezon City from October 31, 2022 to January
31, 203. The researcher will gather data every week with the
aethalometer. The procedure can take 30 minutes to 1 hour

2
on collecting data every week from October to January.
