I- TITLE

6 Basic Skills in Volleyball (passing, digging, blocking, setting, spiking, serving)

II- OBJECTIVES

✓ The main objective of the 6 basic skills in volleyball is to make a player learn to pass,
dig, block, set, spike, and serve for him/her to score a point.
✓ A volleyball pass is a done with the objective to move the ball to a teammate called a
setter.
✓ Learning how to dig in volleyball is an important skill for everyone on the team. A
successful dig keeps your team in the rally and gives another chance to make the point.

✓ Volleyball blocking is defined as deflecting the ball coming from your opponent's
attack hit. Learning blocking aims for defense.
✓ The goal with setting is to get the ball to an attacker. The better the set, the more likely
the attacker will get to score.
✓ The aim of spiking is to attack the opponent team and score. It is the offensive move
to do to your opponent.
✓ The purpose of volleyball serve is to distract the opponent’s offense. It is also the start
of the rally.

III- CONTENT

Volleyball is a team sports played by two teams. Each team usually consist of 6
players. Volleyball is played with the use of the player’s hands to bat a ball back and forth
over a high net trying to make the ball land the opponent’s court. Both teams are only
allowed to touch the ball three times before it must be returned over the net.
In volleyball, there are 6 basic skills that a player should learn. These are passing,
digging, blocking, setting, spiking, and serving. These skills will be discussed further to
the following paragraph.
The first skill that you need to learn is passing. The pass in volleyball means
"bump" or a "forearm pass" because it is performed using the forearms to bump the ball.
Volleyball pass is the first touch by the team. Passing skill is performed when the opponent
team served the ball. Also, on a ball that is attacked by the opponent, passing skill is needed.
In other words, you perform a passing skill on any ball that has been sent over the net to
your teams’ side of the court.
The following skill is the dig. Dig is somehow the same with a pass but different
from it. Like a pass, the position of the arms and the platform is the same. The volleyball
dig can keep your team in the game and is a key skill to develop. When the ball is attacked
by your opponent, your job is to keep the ball from hitting the floor. A dig is a pass of a
hard-driven ball from the other team.
The next skill in playing volleyball is blocking. Blocking is considered as one of
the main defenses in volleyball. The blocker is trying to block the ball back into the
opponent's court. Volleyball players uses block to stop an attack such as spike given by the
opposing team. To perform a block, players jump, reach high beyond the net with their
hands and stop the ball from coming across.
Setting is one of the six skills in playing volleyball. Setting aim is all about your
attackers getting kills. And the better the set, the more likely the attacker will get a kill to
score. Volleyball setting is one of the hardest skill to master in playing volleyball. Setting
is the second step of passing. It can be done to either you dump the ball over into an
undefended spot of your opponent’s court or to “set” the ball into a position that allows the
attacker to spike it over your opponents to score. Setter and the spiker should have good
communication if they want to gain a score.

Spiking is the strategy used by the players to send the ball over the net to the opponent in
such a manner that ball is not returnable. This is considered as the most popular of attacking used
in volleyball is an offensive move. The player will jump and hit the ball down into the
opponent’s court which hopefully results in a "kill" or score of a team. Spiking can be the
outside, middle, and back hits based on what the hitter prefer.

Serving is the first contact that starts every rally. Server who’s position is at the end
of the court, usually uses one open hand swing over the head to hit and send the ball over
the high net. Less experienced players may serve underhand with one closed fist.
Sometimes younger age groups are allowed to serve from within the court so be sure to
check local league rules. There are 3 main types of serves. The float, top spin and jump
serve.
