Cold Application
Definition: Cold application means the application of an agent cooler than the skin. Cold application is
also either moist or dry.
Purpose:

 To reduce pain and body temperature,


 To anaesthetize an area
 To control the growth of bacteria
 To prevent edema and
 To reduce inflammation.

Equipment:

 Large basin with ice.


 Small basin with cold water.
 Gauze pieces or small towels.
 Waterproof pad.
 Bath towel
Rationale:

1. Provides information about the procedure. Promotes client cooperation.


2. To assess necessity and sufficient condition
3. Promotes a smooth work flow. Maintains client comfort and privacy while body is exposed
during procedure.
4. Prevents the spread of microorganisms.
5. Bag is easier to mold over body part when it is not full. Ensures that there are no leaks.
6. Excess air interferes with cold conduction. Allows bag to conform to area and promotes
maximum contact. Releases alcohol-based solution to create cold temperature
7. Protects patient’s tissue and absorbs condensation. Prevents direct exposure of cold against
patients’ skin.
8. Determines if there are adverse reactions to cold e.g. mottling, redness, burning, blistering and
numbness
9. Reduces transfer of microorganism.
10. Prevents the spread of microorganisms.
11. Records information for evaluation and promotes continuity of care.
