ALESSI PIECE – (SLIDE 42 FOR FINAL MASTERPIECE DESIGN)

WRITTEN CONCEPT

 The idea I have chosen to develop for my Alessi Piece is building off the Alessi Filo Tape Dispenser. At first, I
was brainstorming objects that I could transform and had multiple ideas for a tape dispenser, and when I
researched past Alessi Pieces the two themes overlapped. One of the reasons I decided to build off this idea
was that not only did it easily provide reference to various Australian animals and landmarks – such as the
harbour bridge – but it also acted as a blank canvas as the Filo tape produced by Alessi was undetailed. This
allowed for easy development of the idea, without being restricted to features that other products would
require to be functional.
 I will recreate the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with the roll of tape being located at the centre of the bridge
structure. As evident in sketching, it is necessary for the bridge’s length to be out of proportion to the real
infrastructure as the tape dispenser would look weird otherwise (depicted on the next slide). Despite the
shortened bridge, the pylons will remain a in proportion at a 1 to 2,000 scale to the landmark itself. The
dispenser will be made of 3D printed plastic, and then a small roll of tape around 4cm in diameter can be
placed on a rod ready for use. I have the intention to paint the pylons and bridge a beige and grey/black
respectively, but the piece can be monochromatic if necessary. The product replaces a simple plastic tape
dispenser which is flimsy and easily breakable – whilst also proving to display an element of aesthetical
pleasure, resembling on of the most known Australian landmarks
COMPARING
I settled with a shorter bridge for the design for not only aesthetics, but
LENGTHS OF THE as it benefits the stability of the piece’s structure.

THE CUTTING MECHANISM

 The tape dispenser utilises a series of triangular cutting

teeth to snip of sections of tape. The teeth need to be
as long and wide as they are to prevent to product from
breaking. If the teeth prove to be unsuccessful in
ending off the tape, the grip provided by the triangular
shape allow for the tape to easily be accessed before
being cut with scissors, without segments losing their
“stickiness” from being attached to the surface of an
object

ORGANIZER
CONCEPT – PT.1

The product I intend to create is a hybrid desk organiser and reusable tissue container/dispenser. To
set it apart from other similar designs and to bring a sense of playfulness into the product, it
resembles a castle to a degree – a central “keep” with a slot to dispense tissues, and four circular
turrets on each corner allowing for storage of stationary from pencils to scissors. A sustainable,
reusable tissue dispenser is the first step to transition into buying just the tissues themselves without
the need for the wasteful box, similar to many soap companies, negating the need of wasted
carboard. This is a perfect product for younger generations, appealing to their creativity, need for
storage of pencils, and also educating them to bring about sustainable change. On top of that, 3D-
printed plastics are almost always recyclable, allowing for the used product to live a new life and in
turn preventing damage caused on the environment.
CONCEPT – PT.2

What makes this product special is its multifunctionality, Saving space, and preventing the need to
buy multiple products (and thus increasing sustainability). The tissue dispenser/desk organiser will
be made primarily out of 3D printed plastic – but it’s reusability outweighs potential environmental
costs. I drew inspiration from examples 4 and 5 of the visual interest pages, which I came across
while I was searching for a smaller multifunctional product that could be realistically created and
used. When the idea of tissues popped up, I decided to experiment with design features and the idea
of the castle was developed in my third sketch. With colouring, the product is likely to remain a shade
of grey as other colours would be unfitting, and texturing would be difficult with the scale of the
product. To conclude, the product is to incorporate both storage needs and sustainability, with a
simple but moderately large design allowing for suitable organisation and decoration whilst being as
environmentally friendly as the product can allow.

HUGO MOLLOY
CONCEPT – PT.1
The product I intend to create is a modular desk organiser/stationary holder. This is a unique take on
the widespread designs in the current market as it allows for a great variety of customisation to take
place in reorganising the piece in order to best fit its environment and/or user.

This is a step towards sustainability with a reusable tissue box/holder eliminating the need for the
wasteful box, similar to what has been done many soap companies. This is a perfect product for all
ages – in an office space it can be adjusted to serve different purposes, and younger generations will
enjoy moving the modules around – and satiating their need for storage of pencils.

On top of that, 3D-printed plastics are almost always recyclable, allowing for the used product to live a
new life and in turn preventing damage caused on the environment. And if it were to be constructed
with wood, this material will last much longer so the long-term use outweighs the initial cost
CONCEPT – PT.2

What makes this product special is its multifunctionality: saving space and preventing the need to
buy multiple products (thus increasing sustainability), and making it versatile of different scenarios.
The tissue dispenser/desk organiser will be made primarily out of 3D printed plastic – but it’s
reusability outweighs potential environmental costs. I drew inspiration from the tissue box on the next
slide, for its use in many different orientations to fit in different corners, and a few other modular
designs online – though what I have done seems to be unique in the market.

In terms of colouring the product is likely to remain monochrome, though whether that means black,
white, blue, red, or plain wood texture is to be decided.
To conclude, the product is to incorporate both storage needs, customisability and sustainability, with
a simple but moderately large design allowing for suitable organisation and decoration whilst being
as environmentally friendly as the product can allow.

LARGE MODULE

The largest module requires 2 pegs to clip onto, and has two adjustable sliders – one supposed to fit on either side of the
holder, the other which can be adjusted as shown above. Both sliders are removable.
SMALL MODULES
These smaller modules only require 1 peg to clip onto, and are a tissue box (left) and a stationary box with a lid.
MODULAR BOARD

The board itself consists of 6 pegs to which the modules can be clipped onto, they also come with squares as shown above to cover
these pegs to prevent injury and increase an overall aesthetic when the pegs may be exposed
