1. “We need house as we need clothes, architecture stimulates fashion. It’s like hunger
and thirst- you need them both” Karl Lagerfeld. Discuss this statement from your
point of view. Use more than five (05) examples with suitable imagers to prove your
ideas.

Fashion and architecture are two aesthetically driven products expression which facilitate
impermanent social and physical. These two fields are interrelated through their visual Surfaces
and tactile natures, their sensitivity towards the human body, and most dominating role of
surface perception and creation. Fashion manipulates the surfaces of our bodies by creating
illusions through layering fabric, strategically revealing and concealing. Architecture employs
various materials to generate spaces which multiple bodies inhabit through identifying their
surfaces and subsequent forms.

Both fashion design and architecture have long been used to express ideas of personal, social
and cultural identity. However, in recent years practitioners in both disciplines have moved
beyond the idea of merely signifying value, status and belonging, to express more complex and
provocative issues surrounding notions of identity.

There are some examples that can discuss this statement.

 Roman arts and architecture parallels the history of Roman dress. They inherited their
style from the Greeks, The original pattern inspired from architecture,

 When it comes to gothic clothing the Gothic style of architecture also originated in
France. Characteristic features of Gothic architecture were towering spires, pointed
arches, strong vertical divisions, and delicate tracery. The disjointed engagement
between the heavily ornamented with exquisitely handcrafted facade of a gothic church
had no reflection towards the internal space which it enclosed because due to the scale
of the concrete or masonry load bearing walls. The interior of such buildings are
internally oriented based on program, unassociated to its exterior.
Gothic and Baroque architecture were based on heavy ornamentation of both the
exterior and interior of a building. Facades were heavily ornamented with exquisitely
handcrafted historical or religious motifs that were typically exclusive to the rich or for
religious buildings.

 Gothic and Baroque architecture were based on heavy ornamentation of both the
exterior and interior of a building. Facades were heavily ornamented with exquisitely
handcrafted historical or religious motifs which communicate its method of production,
in turn expressing the spirit and identity of a building.
 The textile technique of weaving has been adopted by architecture to connect the
spatial volumes of buildings, create complex interlaced interior spaces, and craft
unconventional surfaces. Fashion designers are responding by using weave in
increasingly architectonic ways, lacing, knitting and plaiting warp and weft together in
unorthodox combinations.

 The use of geometry to generate form is a strategy shared by both architects and
fashion designers. Simple forms such as circles, squares, and ellipses as well as more
complex forms such as the torus and the Möbius strip, with its convoluted twist and
continuous form, are used in both disciplines. In architecture, geometry is often used to
create complex interior spaces or shape the overall physical form of the building, while
in fashion design, once a garment is draped on a body, its shape is transformed and the
geometry that generated it often becomes invisible.

2. Discuss five (05) influencing factors affected to clothing and style development in the
specific cultural gathering. Use proper examples and imagers to enrich your
discussion.

clothing is an an object worn on or around the body and refers to 3-dimensional

objects that enclose and envelop the body in some way. The wearing of clothing is
mostly restricted to human beings and is a feature of all human societies. The type
of clothing worn depends on gender, body type, social, and geographic
considerations.
Clothing serves many purposes: it can serve as protection and prickles by providing
a barrier between the skin and the environment. Clothes can insulate against cold or
hot conditions, and provide a hygienic barrier, keeping infectious away from the
body. Clothing also provides protection from ultraviolet radiation. Also modesty,
attraction and communication provide from cloths.
The clothes that people choose to wear on cultural gatherings are influenced by several
factors in any culture In any culture,:

 Climate and natural resources

 Religion, ideology, ritual
 Technology
 occasion
 Culture contact and diffusion of ideas
 Social and political organization
 History
 Aesthetic rules.
I. Climate and natural resources- People living in cold climate need to wear
woolen clothes to keep warm. People living in very hot climates as in
desserts need to wear turbans of thick cloth to protect their heads and wear
garments made of cotton to stay cool.

II. Religion, ideology, ritual- Serengeti, in the Sahara, a Scottish tartan. White
beads symbolize milk; red, blood; black, skin; and orange, generosity. Blue
symbolizes God, because it shares the color of the sky, and green beads are
said to represent vegetation after rainfall, a symbol of peace.
III. Culture contact and diffusion of ideas- The characteristics of a culture and
people within that culture to find out what their dress means, Something as
simple as color may have very different meanings in dress in different
cultures. Red is a common funeral color in Zambia, Africa, and a wedding
dress color in traditional China. it means if someone wear a bright red dress
to a close relative’s funeral or a bride wore a bright red dress to her
wedding in the United States.
IV. Occasion- Many professions have a specific dress code which gives them a
special identity. As an example in now a days People working in the hotel
industry, airlines, traffic policemen, security guards, etc. Certain specialized
activities require special apparel. In history there were like For going out, a
cloak or mantle was worn, which was typically made from a roughly circular
or rectangular piece of cloth which might, too, be fur-lined. Nightwear was
not much of a social indicator and did not take a whole lot of forethought as
most people slept naked. Gloves were worn outdoors and might go almost
up to the elbow.

V. History- Every society has its traditional clothing, as a honor to their

ancestors, family tradition or culture. Different societies around the world
are distinguished less by different clothes than by subtle local differences in
the styles, cuts, colors, tones and combinations they wear. Clothes play a
significant cultural role in creating a sense of belonging, unity and collective
identity.

and Iron age with five (05) suitable examples. Use proper imagers to enrich your
discussion.

world are different and early people had to adapt to their surroundings. It is almost
Stone Age man prefer nudity. They were certainly naked in their time. Due to
climate changes and other conditions they started doing agriculture and hunting.
They are the first people who used needle and thread, weaving, wooden tools. By
using needle and thread they stitched leather, animal skin, fur and other materials
to protect themselves from cold.
 After discovering of use of thick furry hides clothing was born. They developed
more specialized tools, processed hides, and perfected sewing. Moss, flax, fibers,
tree bark, and grass were all used besides hides and fur. Early man developed snow
shoes for traversing deep snow, and made ropes and nets from plant fiber.

 Bronze age- early Bronze Age female clothing in Denmark was made from fine wool,
and the yarn that stitched wool was colored wool. The colors were like off white,
white, brown and grey. Female garments came as two parts like skirt and bodice.
 As an example Otzi ” is the preserved Bronze Age ice man in the Ö tztal Alps between
Italy and Austria. His clothes were made solely from leather, hide and braided grass.
His garments, practical and functional, afforded protection from the cold and wet.
His outfit completed with a hide coat and grass matt, a legging and a belt, underwear
and a pouch.
