ASM Module 3: The Samples Have
Arrived!

This Lesson Covers:

1. What to Expect When Your Samples Arrive

2. The Best Way to Test for Quality

3. What to Do if None of the Samples Work Out

4. Take Action

1. What to Expect
Here are some things to remember, while you wait for your samples to arrive:

● Samples can take anywhere from a few days to over a week to arrive—get a
tracking number from the supplier a few days after they have shipped the
sample. Ask for another one if the sample hasn’t arrived within a week.
● Keep a box cutter and some scissors handy—suppliers often wrap their packages
in several layers of tape and bubble-wrap!
● The product might arrive with some unexpected issues. Make sure to confirm
with the supplier that the following things will NOT be part of the final product:
○ No packaging
○ Packaging in another language
○ Another company’s logo

2. Checking for Quality
Make sure that your Product Opportunity spreadsheet is open, then do the following:

● Test to see how your product sample stands up against both the positive and the
negative reviews.
● Take notes! Use your Product Opportunities spreadsheet to keep track of all
product, supplier, and sample activities.
● Ask the supplier for instructions on product use and specifications.
● Don’t be gentle—pretend that the child of a customer got ahold of this product,
and started doing everything possible with it (even things that the product is not
intended for)!
● Ask friends and family for their honest opinions.
● Put stickers on any samples that are identical, so that you can identify which one
comes from which supplier.
● Test out exactly how long your product will run on a fresh set of batteries (if your
product requires batteries).
● Enter all of this information into your spreadsheet. We recommend keeping track
of the following:
○ Supplier name
○ Supplier contact email
○ Supplier Skype address
○ Sample order dates and arrival times
○ Sample quality (how does it compare to the reviews? What else did you
notice?)
○ Anything else that you want to keep track of

Remember to keep your notes in the Product Opportunity spreadsheet. Use the above
suggestions, and add any other information that you find pertinent to your
record-keeping.

3. What if None of Your Samples Work Out?

If you ordered three samples from three different suppliers, you should be okay.
However, this isn’t always the case. Take the following steps if none of the samples
meet your expectations:

● Get samples from your other potential suppliers if the product has good reviews
on Amazon—the problem is probably your supplier.
● Move on to the next best product and order samples if the product struggles
with negative reviews on Amazon—some products will never meet customer
expectations.

4. Take Action
Now, it’s your turn!

Evaluate your samples and take thorough, organized notes in your product opportunity
spreadsheet, before moving on to the next lesson, where you will choose the right
supplier, and get the best pricing.
