EDGE Transmission
B9 Key Features
Page 5

The goal : Reduce A-bis consumption

„ underdimension terrestrial transmission resources,
compared to full speed on Air interface on all TRX
Optimisation of A-bis is performed thanks to two features :
„ Dynamic A-bis & Statistical GCH Multiplexing
Dynamic A-bis
„ The BSS dynamically allocates A-bis nibbles to a TRX, depending on the
Packet traffic in this TRX
Packet Multiplexing
„ Aggregation of all data traffic of each TRX as one single “big pipe”

Îminimum A-bis consumption

ÎMaximum throughput

EDGE Transmission
B9 Key Principles
Page 6

No impact on voice quality

„ No dynamic Abis for voice

Minimum number of extra timeslots on the A-bis interface

„ Use all A-bis nibbles - including bonus nibbles
„ Maximum sharing

In case of A-bis congestion,

„ Equity mechanism to distribute transmission resources between TRX
„ Maximum radio throughput with the available transmission resources

Terminology for B9 Release
Page 7
“Basic” nibbles
„ Result from fixed mapping of radio timeslots (e.g.TCH) on the A-bis interface
„ Carry the CS (and part of the PS) traffic
“Extra” nibbles
„ Additional A-bis timeslots
„ Their number is defined by the operator: Full flexibility !
“Bonus” nibbles
„ Basic Nibbles corresponding to BCCH or SDCCH For free !
„ Up to B9, free unless used to transport TRX & O&M signalling links (RSL +OML)

Dynamic A-bis Feature

Distributes a number transmission resources (nibbles) to each

TRX of the A-bis link
„ Extra and bonus nibbles are shared at BTS level
„ Basic nibbles are shared at cell level
This number is based on the actual packet demand in the
TRX
An equity mechanism ensures that all TRX of the BTS are
served with fairness
„ Played at each TBF establishment & on a regular basis
„ Extra/Bonus-nibbles are distributed with fairness to all TRX which
require A-bis resource

A-bis Packet Multiplexing Key Benefits
Page 10

Always efficient ... Whatever the load conditions:

Out of Congestion :
„ Reduced A-bis consumption
„ Aggregation of all data traffic of each TRX as one single “big pipe”
During A-bis Congestion:
„ Automatic adaptation of radio throughput to the size of the “TRX Packet pipe”
„ Resulting in a potential reduction of the radio throughput
„ No impact on Link Adaptation – the (M)CS is not changed
„ Instantaneous reaction to transmission variations inside a TRX

The TRX packet pipe is filled up as much as possible

Î maximum radio throughput

EDGE B9 Key Transmission Principles
Summary
Page 11

No impact on voice quality

Optimise radio throughput while minimising A-bis consumption
„ Full flexibility in the definition of A-bis extra timeslots
„ Use all A-bis TS including signalling TS
„ Maximum sharing at BTS level
In case of A-bis congestion :
„ Distribute transmission resources between all TRXs with fairness
„ Optimise usage of terrestrial resource to minimise radio throughput
degradation

For QoS negotiation ... Support of Packet Flow Context

feature

To guarantee a given bit rate ...

Impact on Call Admission Control

Definition of a minimum throughput per PDCH (on a per cell basis) +

margin to take into account radio fluctuations
Rejection of the PFC if the required throughput can not be satisfied

Support of Guaranteed Bit Rate QoS parameter (initially negotiated

between appli/MS & Core Network)
The required resources are then reserved and cannot be pre-empted

Streaming handling:
BSS impacts ...
Page 17

Example: Video clip - 60 kb/s is required

Assumptions / Cells conditions:
Radio Throughput available at cell border: 15 kb/s
4 TS dedicated to packet: used by a Non Real Time WAP user

TS with WAP user

TRX
CS TS

... The demand is accepted: 4 TS are allocated to the video service

If good radio conditions … If bad radio conditions …

Radio throughput >15 kb/s per TS All the packet bandwidth is used
the rest of the bandwidth is used by the WAP user by the streaming service
