PART – A (10 X 4 = 40 Marks)

Answer ALL Questions
1. Define the following properties of a battery: [4x1]
(a) Capacity (b) nominal voltage (c) Cut off voltage (d) self discharge.
2. Discuss the principle and of SOFC with a flow diagram.
3. What is the difference between HCV and LCV? What are the correction factors used while calculating
HCV of a fuel?
4. What is the basic principle involved in EDTA method of estimation of hardness of water?
5. An element in halogen family is widely used as a disinfectant. Apart from this, write any two methods of
disinfection of water.
6. What measures will you take to protect an underground steel sump for water storage installed in your
house?
7. Write a note on pitting corrosion. How is it different from stress corrosion?
8. How is volatile matter determined in coal and what is its significance. A coal weighing 5.5 gms has
reduced to 4.85gms after removal of moisture and then reduced to 4.0gms after removal of volatile
matter. Calculate the percentage of volatile matter present in the coal.
9. Give the principle and write a brief procedure with diagram of moulding which is applicable only to
thermoplastics.
10. What is Doping? Explain any one method of doping to convert a polymer into ICP.
PART – B (5 X 12 = 60 Marks)
Answer any FIVE Questions
11. a) A hard water sample has 81mg/L of Ca(HCO3)2, 166.5 mg/L of CaCl2, 11.5 mg/L of NaCl and 95 mg/L [7]
of MgCl2. Calculate the amount of lime and soda required for treating 50000L of water given the
purity of lime as 87% and soda 93% .
(Mol. Wt. of CaCl2 =111, Ca(HCO3)2= 162, MgCl2= 95, NaCl = 58.5)
b) What is break point chlorination? Explain with a graph. [5]
