CONSIDERING THE ECONOMIC CRISIS IN NIGERIA:

WHAT NEXT AFTER GRADUATION?

A LECTURE PRESENTED BY DR T. N. MADANDOLA AS THE GUEST SPEAKER AT
2021 SRC DAY & GRADUATION CEREMONY OF EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY KWCOED ORO
CAMPUS, HELD ON 28TH OCTOBER 2021.

Protocols
It is a surprising honor I am enjoying today to stand before this honorable gathering comprising
majorly of Senior colleagues in NOBLE PROFESSION, Politicians, business mogul and working-
class-students to present this lecture “CONSIDERING THE ECONOMIC CRISIS IN NIGERIA:
WHAT NEXT AFTER GRADUATION”. When I got a call to be a guest speaker from Comr.
Omotosho Adebayo (SRC President) for this noble gathering I was perplexed and confused in giving
immediate response because of two reasons. 1. Why me out of all to speak in the presence of senior
colleagues in the noble profession? 2. Won’t people say family affair? Within the meditating period he
said please don’t reject it I am not the one that pen down your name, it was other executives in
conjunction with the Council Adviser. Here I am today to do justice to the topic.

An economic crisis is a situation in which a country’s economy deteriorates significantly. It could be a

stock market crash, a spike in inflation or unemployment, or a series of bank failures. They have
severe effects even though they don't always lead to a recession. The collapse in oil prices coupled
with the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to plunge the Nigerian economy into a severe economic
recession, the worst since the 1980s (World Bank Nigeria Development Update, 2021).

Graduation is a special ceremony in which receiving or conferring of an academic degree or diploma

take place to mark successful completion of studies.

Obviously, graduating from UNIVERSITY is really a big deal, accept my CONGRATULATIONS !!!

Graduation from university can be inspiring. But life after graduation can be daunting and stressful.
The graduates are faced with major life-changing decisions such as initiating a job search, deciding to
begin a career, or maybe continuing with their education. Naturally, this new phase of your life brings
about a bunch of changes.

Changes That Are Guaranteed To Happen to You from couple of days now:

1. It takes a little while adjusting to a life without attendance and semesters.

2. No begging/bribing of cooperative management against September/October favor.

3. Your ego/level will change

4. Not having to do homework is the best thing ever after graduation.

5. Your formal friends become an important part of your life.

6. Self-care increases and you will feel pity about the way you have treated yourself throughout

the university.

7. Applying/looking for more lucrative job

With the economic crisis in Nigeria; Zero your mind from what Government can offer you but what
you can offer the Society. When I see how economic crisis is causing much unemployment among
graduating students in my department that was why I change the traditional theoretical seminar course
of both degree and NCE students to PRACTICAL training, in which some of them have been able to
be self-employed now. They learn’t Instant Photographing, Burning on Disk, System repairs,
Electronic Message Board, Flex design to mention a few. My dear graduands, I will like to suggest
few ways to tackle or reduce the negative impact of economic crisis for you to be able to make both
ends meet. They include:

 Continuing that your cooperative savings, it will assist in setting up a business

 Be IT compliance. Your phone will be your shop. As a scientist we can’t deny that ICT
also bring negative effects to our society in a certain degree but if use properly one has
much to gain than its harm.
 Engage in Agriculture (poultry, fishery, vegetables)
 Build confidence in yourself then establish coaching centres, part time lecturing, research-
tutor and motivational speaker

 Further your education, first degree is now ordinary paper

Ladies and gentlemen, some people knew from an early age exactly what they want to be when they
are adults and how they can get there. Others aren't sure of their plans, and that's okay too. Regardless
of what you want to be, what you are now, what certain is human wants is unlimited and NOT-
satisfiable therefore strive out of the economic crisis as a young graduate with the little points
highlighted above.

THANKS FOR LISTENING.
