It is required to standardise load-carrying capacities of dumpers in a manufacturing unit, The maximum and minimum capacities of such dampers are 40 and 630kN respectively. The company is interested in developing seven models in this range. Specify their load carrying capacities. ‘A machine member 50 mm diameter by 250 mm long and supported at one end as @ cantilever as shown in Fig QU(c). Determine the stresses at critical points. Briefly explain different modes of failure of a mechanical component. State and explain maximum normal stress theory and maximum shear stress theory of failure. ‘The force acting on a bolt consists of two components ~ an axial pull of 12 kN and a transverse shear force of 6 KN. The bolt is made of steel having yield strength of 310 Némm? and the factor of safety of 2.5. Determine the diameter of bolt using i) Maximum shear stress theory and ii) Distortion energy theory of failure. Module - II What is stress concentration? Illustrate with neat sketches methods used to reduce stress concentration. Derive Soderberg’s equation with usual notations. ‘A round shaft made of a brittle material and subjected to a bending moment of 15 N-m is as shown in Fig Q3(c). The stress concentration factor at the fillet is 1.5 and ultimate tensile strength of the shaft material is 200 N/mm*. Itis used with a collar having an outer diameter of 100 mm and inner diameter of 65 mm. The coefficient of friction at the thread surface as well as at the collar surface can be taken as 0.15. Module - V A simple band brake operates on a drum 0.5 m in diameter. The coefficient of friction is 0.4 and the angle of contact of the band is 225°. One end of the band is fastened to a fixed pin and other end to 250 mm from fixed pin. . The brake arm is 750 mm long.
