Module no. 3
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Activity 1
1. When must I provide PPE
 If you are an employer, you must offer personal protective equipment (PPE) to your
employees in order to protect them against workplace risks. Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) is a tremendous assist and highly useful at work since a person may
come into touch with toxic chemicals and other irritants at work, and it will protect
them from such dangerous things. Employees must be provided with the appropriate
PPE, especially if their workplace poses a risk to their health or is likely to pose a risk to
their health.
2. If employees wear eyeglasses with prescription lenses, may I consider these as eye
protection?
 No, regular eyeglasses serve a different purpose and should not be used as eye
protection because they do not provide enough protection against workplace risks.
Employees who use eyeglasses with prescription lenses must be provided with the
appropriate protective eyewear for eye protection. It could be a pair of goggles that fit
comfortably over corrective spectacles without interfering with their alignment.
Another option is goggles with corrective lenses installed behind protective lenses, so
that if an employee's contact lenses fail, they can still utilize the same protective
eyewear.
3. Could employees wearing hard hats and working at elevations create a potential hazard for
the employees working below?
 Yes, there is a significant risk that personnel working below will be injured or harmed by
debris from above, particularly falling debris. Chin straps for protective helmets worn by
employees operating at high elevations such as aerial lifts must be provided in order to
safeguard people working below. The chin straps keep the hard hats from flying off the
heads of the workers.
4. Is there one kind of glove that will protect against all workplace hazards?
 There is no single glove that can protect employees against all risks. There are several
different types of gloves available now that can protect you from a range of threats.
Metal Mesh or Canvas Gloves, which provide protection against cuts and burns, Fabric &
Coated Fabric Gloves, which are composed of cotton and provide varied degrees of
protection. Chemical and Liquid-Resistant Gloves are another type of glove composed of
rubber, plastic, or synthetic rubber.
5. Why should workers be outfitted with the more expensive industrial respirators when look
alike “nuisance masks” are available?
 Respirators are effective filters for harmful dusts prevalent in production environments
such as welding, grinding, and even repair operations. This respirator must fulfill quality

1
and performance criteria, and it must be approved by the government. Respirators are
preferable to available nuisance masks because nuisance masks have lesser filtration
and are less effective than certified masks. Another reason to avoid using annoyance
mask is that it lacks official clearance and certification and does not meet any quality
criteria.

6. Is cotton sufficient as earplugs?

 Cotton does not work well as an earplugs alternative. It will not provide comprehensive
protection against a loud workplace. Use single-use ear plugs, ear muffs, or canal caps
for effective and suitable ear protection.
7. Once I have selected the specific PPE for my workers, how do I make sure they use it properly?
 You must first train the workers how to correctly use the PPE before you can ensure that
they are doing so. Give them an understanding of why PPE is so important in their
workplace and how the specific PPE will protect them. Workers should be taught how to
properly put on protective equipment, as well as how to clean and maintain it. It's also
crucial to train them how to recognize symptoms of wear, such as cuffed and cracked
shoes, and to always inform them of the company's PPE policy, laws, and regulations.
8. How often should hard hats be inspected?
 Inspections of hard hats must be done on a regular basis, even if no incident has
occurred that could cause the hat to be damaged. Because these hard hats are exposed
to heat and other potentially harmful elements on a daily basis while in use, it is critical
to inspect them on a regular basis.
9. What is the proper way to dispose a PPE?
 It is critical to properly dispose of personal protective equipment so that other people
are unable to use it and are not exposed to serious injury. When it comes to PPE
disposal, it's important to make sure that toxins aren't released in an area where they
could cause harm. Discarded PPE must be placed in a specific garbage bag and secured
when it is full. After that, the bag should be placed in a bin and stored in a secure
location out from children's reach.
10. What PPE is used for working over dangerous equipment and machinery?
 Head Protection (Hard Hat)
 Apron/Lab Coats
 Hearing Protection
 Eye Protection (Goggles)
 Face Protection (Face Shields)
 Hand Protection (Gloves)
