BSME-4 DESIGN OF V-BELT DRIVE

A 180.71 hp, 687 rpm induction motor is to drive a jaw crusher at 145 rpm; starting load
is heavy; operating with shock; intermittent service; C = 113 to 123 in. Recommend a multiple
V- flat belt drive for this installation.
Given:
P = 180.71 hp C = 117 in
n1 = 687 rpm
n2 = 145 rpm

SOLUTION:
• Design horsepower
ℎ𝑝𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛
𝑁𝑠𝑓 =
ℎ𝑝𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑑
ℎ𝑝𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛 = 𝑁𝑠𝑓 ℎ𝑝𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑑
where:
Nsf = 1.6 – 0.2, At table 17.7, FAIRES p.460 – driving machine is induction motor driving a jaw
crusher, intermittent service
Nsf = 1.4

ℎ𝑝𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛 = 1.4(180.71ℎ𝑝)

hpdesign = 252.994 hp

• Belt section
from Table 17.14 FAIRES p.457,
✓ Hpdesign = 252.994 hp
✓ n1 = 687rpm
therefore, recommended section is E-SECTION.

• Diameter of driver(small) pulley

from Table 17.3,
Note that there is no minimum sheave diameter for E-section, therefore use D-section. So, let
D1 = 13in

• Diameter of driven(big) pulley

𝑛1 𝐷2
=
𝑛2 𝐷1
𝑛1𝐷1 687(13) D2 = 61.59 in
𝐷2 = =
𝑛2 145
• Pitch line velocity, Vm
𝜋𝐷1 𝑛1
𝑉𝑚 =
12
𝜋(13𝑖𝑛)(687𝑟𝑝𝑚)
𝑉𝑚 =
12
Vm = 2338.1303 ft/min

• Rated power of a single D-Section,

0.09
103 𝑐 𝑉𝑚2 𝑉𝑚
𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 =[𝑎∙( ) − − 𝑒 ∙ 6 ] ( 3)
𝑉𝑚 𝐾𝑑 𝐷1 10 10

- from Table 17.3 FAIRES

- D-Section Constants
a = 18.788
c = 137.7
e = 0.0848
- from Table 17.4 FAIRES, Kd can be determined by the ratio of pulley diameters.
𝐷2 61.59𝑖𝑛
= = 4.7376
𝐷1 13𝑖𝑛
Making Kd = 1.14

Thus,
0.09
103 137.7
𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = [ 18.788 ( ) − − 0.0848
2338.1303𝑓𝑡/𝑚𝑖𝑛 1.14(13𝑖𝑛)
2338.1303𝑓𝑡/𝑚𝑖𝑛2 2338.1303𝑓𝑡/𝑚𝑖𝑛
∙ ]( )
106 103

HPrated = 18.9707 hp

✓ Checking if D-section is appropriate to be used at working conditions of HPrated =

18.9707hp.
✓ At Table 17.14, the appropriate section at HPrated = 18.9707 hp and n1 = 687rpm is C-
Section.
*From Table 17.3 FAIRES, the minimum sheave diameter a C-Section is 7 inches. Therefore,

D1 = 9 inches, making D1 = 13 acceptable!

• New larger pulley diameter,

𝑛1 𝐷2
=
𝑛2 𝐷1
𝑛1𝐷1 687(9)
𝐷2 = =
𝑛2 145
D2 = 42.6413 in

• New pitch line velocity,

𝜋𝐷1 𝑛1
𝑉𝑚 =
12
𝜋(9𝑖𝑛)(687𝑟𝑝𝑚)
𝑉𝑚 =
12
Vm = 1618.7056 ft/min

*From Table 17.3 FAIRES

C-section constants are:

a = 8.792
c = 38.819
e = 0.0416

*From Table 17.4 FAIRES, Kd can be determined by the ratio of pulley diameters.
𝐷2 42.6413 𝑖𝑛
= = 4.7379
𝐷1 9𝑖𝑛
Making Kd = 1.14

Thus, the rated HP for single C-section is,

0.09 𝑓𝑡 2 𝑓𝑡
103 38.819 1618.7056 1618.7056
𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = [ 8.792 ( ) − − 0.0416 ∙ 𝑚𝑖𝑛 ]( 𝑚𝑖𝑛 )
1618.7056𝑓𝑡/𝑚𝑖𝑛 1.14(9𝑖𝑛) 106 103

HPrated = 7.5034 hp
✓ Checking back if C-section is appropriated to be used at HPrated = 7.5034 hp. At Table
17.14
✓ the appropriate section at HPrated = 7.5034hp and n1 = 687rpm is C-Section. Therefore,
use B-Section Belt
*From Table 17.3 FAIRES, the minimum sheave diameter a B-Section is 5.4 inches. Therefore,
the following are still applicable

✓ D1 = 9 inches
✓ D2 = 42.6413 in
✓ Vm = 1618.7056 ft/min
✓ Kd = 1.14

• Adjusted rated HP of the belt,

𝐻𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑑,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 𝐾𝜃 𝐾𝐿 (𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 )

*At Table 17.5 FAIRES, Solving for Arc of Contact Factor, Kθ

Assume C = 115 inches

𝐷2 − 𝐷1 42.6413𝑖𝑛 − 9𝑖𝑛
= = 0.2875
𝐶 117𝑖𝑛
Assuming VV belt drives

So, by interpolation, Kθ = 0.9612

*At Table 17.6 FAIRES, solving for length correction factor, KL

Solve first for the belt length of open connection, L

𝜋 (𝐷2 − 𝐷1)2
𝐿 = 2𝐶 + (𝐷2 + 𝐷1) +
2 4𝐶
𝜋 (42.6413𝑖𝑛 − 9𝑖𝑛)2
𝐿 = 2(117𝑖𝑛) + (42.6413𝑖𝑛 + 9𝑖𝑛) +
2 4(117𝑖𝑛)
L = 317.5362in

o Finding the nearest standard belt number at Table 17.3 FAIRES. For a B-Section Belt,
the calculated length is 317.5362 in therefore we Assume that standard number
B300 with pitch length of L = 300.3in making length correction factor to be KL = 1.27
Thus, adjusted rated HP of a single C-Section belt,

𝐻𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑑,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 0.9612(1.27)(7.5034 ℎ𝑝)

HPadjusted,rated = 9.1595 hp/belt

• Number of belts required,

𝐻𝑃𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛 252.994 ℎ𝑝
𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑠 = =
𝐻𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑑,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 9.1595 ℎ𝑝

No. of Belts = 27.6209 say, 28 belts

• Adjusted center distance, C

We have chosen a standard belt number B270 with pitch length L = 270.3in

𝐵 + √𝐵2 − 32(𝐷2 − 𝐷1)2

𝐶=
16
where:

𝐵 = 4𝐿 − 6.28(𝐷2 + 𝐷1)
𝐵 = 4(300.3𝑖𝑛) − 6.28(42.6413𝑖𝑛 + 9𝑖𝑛)
B = 876.8926in

So,

876.8926𝑖𝑛 + √(876.8926𝑛)2 − 32(42.6413𝑖𝑛 − 9𝑖𝑛)2

𝐶=
16
C = 108.3053 in

Since 113in < 108.3053in < 123in, therefore PASS ✔
