Relief with Phanes, ca. 2nd century

A.D.
Modena, Galleria Estense, inv. 2676

The first bestower of life in the

universe, Phanes emerged from the
cosmic egg at the beginning of time.
For the adepts of Orphism he
represents a new era of salvation: the
band of the zodiac symbolizes eternal
time, while the serpent entwined
around it represents the rapid course
of human time.

• 1,392 almanacs printed between

1640 and 1700
• Two major findings:
– Almanacs played a major part
in the dissemination, and
longevity of traditional
astrological and Galenic
medical practices.
– Almanacs played an important
early role in the growth of
medical materialism in Britain.

changes in tidal amplitude globally,

species and communities inhabiting
rocky shores, and salt marsh
vegetation. Records were obtained

in two estuaries in the northeastern

near the highest tide level where the
impact of the nodal cycle on flood
