Background of Kawasaki Eco-Town Plan
Kawasaki coastal area in 1990s Environmental Issues in 1990’s

・ The bursting of the economic bubble ・ Waste became a social issue

・ Structural change in industry ・ Global warming

(Shift to IT and service)

・ Other Asian countries’ economic growth ・ Increase in energy consumption

“Industrial hollowing-out “New environmental issues

in Kawasaki Coastal Area” occurred”

Potential of Kawasaki Coastal Area

Examples of upgrade in Kawasaki Eco Town:
Overview of the FS for the recycle system upgrade using IoT
Objective
◎ Upgrade recycle system and reduce carbon emission in Kawasaki Eco Town
◎ Start FS to adapt IoT technologies for recycling industry in cooperation with
the enterprises in Kawasaki
◎ FS on the profitable business model. Perform actions that will be possibly
applied in other industries
・Partners -NEC Corporation [Verify IoT technology application]
-NAKASHO [Offer necessary infrastructure for the recycling
system upgrade]
-Resource Circulation Network [Verify overall effects]
・ Main survey ① Measuring the emission rate by video analyzing program
② Optimization route for wastes collection by using system
・ Results
① [Video analyzing] ② [Optimization route ]
-Errors of ±20 % or so -Display the shortest distance
under prescribed condition -The route will be shortened about 9.2%

Moving ever forward:
City of Kawasaki Green Innovation Guidelines

Four pillars of the effort to pursue green innovation

1. Promoting environmental technologies and industries

2. Creating environmentally friendly mechanisms

3. Cooperation action among various players

4. International contributions through environmental

technologies

17
Summary

◆Among approved 26 Eco-towns, Kawasaki Eco-town promotes recycles at

a high standard; demonstrating a ‘showcase’ (benchmark) role as to
resource recycling.
◆Its remarkable advantage is collaboration with manufacturers including
material makers. Its recycle facility has the function to process industrial
wastes into raw fuel for other industries.
◆The coastal area of Kawasaki City aggressively recycles/reuses energy
and water, and promotes the comprehensive recycling system which is
well-suited “Smart community model”.

◆We will promote activities of Kawasaki Eco-town further toward green

innovation, while it has been started for “promoting environmental
industry” and “establishing the recycling-based society” so far.
