DEFINITION

Benedict’s Test - is a procedure to test the presence of sugar in


the urine.

PURPOSES

 To detect the level of sugar persisting in the urine.


 Aids in diagnosing disease like diabetes mellitus.
 Aids in determining amount of insulin to be administered
for diabetic client.
PRINCIPLES

1. Early morning urine of the client should be used.


2. Instruction to the client regarding the proper way
of collecting the urine (mid-stream urine).
3. All equipment to be used must be clean.

MATERIALS

 10 cc. test tube                            


 Benedict reagent               
 Alcohol lamp                      
 Medicine dropper (2 pieces)
 Test tube holder
 Urine specimen (early morning urine, midstream
flow)
 Match
PROCEDURE

1. Place the plastic lining on a table or any clean,


flat surface.
2. Place the CHN bag over the plastic lining, tucking
the handles beneath the bag.
3. Open the bag, take out the apron, soap in dish
and towel.
4. Do thorough hand washing

5. Put on your apron.

6. Take out 2 droppers, the test tube and test tube


holder. Take out the match, alcohol lamp,
Benedict reagent.
7. Place the waste receptacle at one corner of the
work area.
8. Obtain a standardized color chart for sugar
testing.
9. Fill 5 cc. of benedict reagent in a 10 cc. test
tube.
10. Add 8 drops of urine and mix well. Light the lamp.

11. Using the test tube holder hold the mixture over
the flame, being careful that the mouth of the
test tube is away from the technician. Boil for
two minutes or keep it in a boiling water bath for
5 minutes.
12. Remove from flame. Put off flame. Let stand for one
minute.
13. Compare result with color chart.

14. Record the findings. Chart the time, type and results
of the test.
15. Wash the test tube, test tube holder and droppers.
Discard waste.
16. Do thorough hand washing, dry hands.

17. Return all articles to their proper place in the


bag.
18. Remove apron. If it is soiled place it in a
separate paper bag.
19. Fold the plastic lining, used top in. 

20. Hold the bag with lining, folding contaminated part in


place on top of the plastic lining.
21. Close the bag.
