Field Experience Student Checklist


Use this checklist to ensure that you are prepared to begin field experience at the time prescribed by your Program
of Study. The timeframes listed are the latest you should be completing the tasks. It is never too early to start
preparing for field experience! See the Field Experience Manual and SOC-OFE Website for detailed information
about field experience requirements, site search resources, and the field experience application process.

Task Quarter
1. Complete the New Student Orientation, which includes an Introduction to Field 1
Experience.

2. Review your Program of Study, paying attention to the timing of your field 2
experience.

3. Read the Field Experience Manual to learn about your program’s field experience 3
requirements.

4. Learn about licensure/certification requirements for the state(s) in which you think 3
you will want to be licensed/certified.
a. Pay attention to requirements (coursework and field experience) that are
beyond your program’s requirements.
b. Request to add the State Education Specialization to your program, if
needed.

5. Prepare to search for a field site 4


a. Visit Career Services for specific information for field experience students
about creating your resume and cover letter, interviewing tips, etc.
b. Check out the resources on the Site Search Resources page of the SOC-OFE
Website.

6. Start searching for a field site 5


a. Use the Site Search Resources on the SOC-OFE website
b. Keep track of your efforts on the Site Search Contact Record

c. Ask for help if you need it!

7. Review POS and ensure that your prerequisite coursework is on track for completion 6
prior to field experience (prerequisites include all core coursework, Pre-Practicum I
and II, and Group Lab)

8. Apply for Field Experience as soon as you have your site secured. 7, 8
a. See the SOC-OFE Website for information about the application process.
b. See the Meditrek Student Guide for detailed instructions for using
Meditrek.
c. Remember to submit an application for each quarter of field experience
within the published Application Submission Window (separate
applications are required for Practicum, Internship I, and Internship II,
even if you will stay with the same site and supervisor).
