Introduction to Java

Definition

What is Java?
• object-oriented, class-based, general-purpose programming language
• created to have fewer implementation requirements
• an application development platform for computers
• used to create Java applications for smartphones, gaming consoles, laptops, data centers, and other
devices

What is Java Platform?

• is a group of apps that aid developers in creating and executing Java programming applications quickly
• has a compiler, an execution engine, and a number of libraries
• consists of a collection of requirements and computer software
• created by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems, eventually purchased by Oracle Corporation

Uses
• Used for developing Android Apps
• Helps to create Enterprise Software
• Wide range of Mobile Java Applications
• Scientific Computing Applications
• Used for Big Data Analytics
• Java Programming of Hardware devices
• Used for Server-Side Technologies like Apache, JBoss, GlassFish, etc.

Importance
• Java is used to build applications and platforms for a number of devices, including computers, laptops,
gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, car navigation systems, medical monitoring devices, parking meters,
lottery terminals and smartphones.
• It is also a key language for networking, particularly for data centers that store and transfer Web-based
data.

History of Java
• In June 1991, James Gosling (regarded as the creator of Java), Mike Sheridan, and Patrick
Naughton started working on the Java language project. Green Team is the name of a small
group of solar engineers.
• It was first created for tiny embedded systems found in electrical devices like set-top boxes.
• To begin with, the file’s name was “Greentalk” by James Gosling, and its extension was .gt.
• Following that, it was renamed Oak and created as a component of the Green project.
• “Simple, Robust, Portable, Platform-independent, Secured, High Performance, Multithreaded,
Architecture Neutral, Object-Oriented, Interpreted, and Dynamic” were the guiding concepts for
developing Java programming.
• Launched in 1995 after being initially created by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems, a company
that is now a division of Oracle Corporation.
• Java was named one of the Top Ten Products of 1995 by Time magazine in 1995.
• On January 23, 1996, JDK 1.0 was made available. There have been several new features added
to Java since its first release. Java is now utilized in Windows programs, Web programs, business
programs, mobile programs, cards, etc. New features are added to Java with every release.

Why was Java named as “Oak”?

• Many nations, like the United States, France, Germany, Romania, etc., have selected the oak as
their national tree because it is a symbol of strength.
• Because Oak Technologies had already registered the name as a trademark, it was changed to
Java in 1995.
Why is Java Programming named “Java”?

• The team desired a name that captured the spirit of the technology.

• It had to be novel, energetic, vibrant, cool, original, easy to spell, and enjoyable to speak.

• Java and Silk were the top two options - Java was picked because it was so distinctive.

• James Gosling picked the name Java while enjoying a cup of coffee close to his workplace.

• Indonesia’s Java island is where the first coffee was made (called Java coffee).
