Some of my hobbies include designing clothes, reading, and pottery. Designing and making
garments give me more freedom with the fabric & cut, compared to shopping for generic
clothing. Since starting 2 years ago, I have already produced many dresses and skirts for myself
and family members. Through these experiences, I have improved a lot in my patterning,
cutting, and sewing, which allows for more complicated garments. In addition to designing
clothes, I also enjoy reading detective novels. As of currently, I have finished reading all of
Agatha Christie’s mysteries with Miss Marple as the detective as well as the entire Sherlock
Holmes novel series. I enjoy reading detective novels, particularly those in a historical setting,
because I am able to synonymously solve the crime alongside the protagonist, giving me a
sense of accomplishment. It is also very interesting to see how the crime was committed in
each case. Another hobby of mine is pottery. I started learning pottery in 6th grade, when it
was first offered as an afterschool activity. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with pottery.
Since then, I’ve continued pottery and has made many pots, bowls, and cups. I enjoyed this
hobby so much that even changing countries and switching schools didn’t prevent me from
pursuing pottery.

My proudest accomplishment is that I was able to keep up with my studies despite transferring
schools from a Chinese public school to an international school in Myanmar, and then to an
international school in China. The teaching methods at the different institutions varied
drastically, and I spent many hours adjusting to the new learning environment. In the end, I was
proud of my adaptability.

Anything textiles. I found great meaning with sewing during a Design Technology class, where I
chose to create pillowcases for one of my assignments using a sewing machine. Aside from the
thrill that the experience brought, I also produced functional pillowcases, including one for a
small pillow that always seemed to be a challenge to find a compatible pillowcase. Shortly after
realizing the tremendous amount of potential that comes with such a machine, I decided to buy
one of my very own so that I could also practice my sewing outside of class. Since then, I had
made pajamas, a long skirt, and a light green dress. These unique experiences taught me that
being able to make my own clothes allowed for more range in customization regarding fit and
design and it is a way for me to express my creativity. Additionally, making my own clothes
meant I could promote slow fashion where I can select high-quality materials and make clothing
that can be worn for many years to come. My only other option for producing clothing is to buy
from fast fashion brands, where the garments are deliberately made of significantly lower
quality, meaning purchasing new clothes would turn into a more frequent chore. Naturally,
making my own clothes from scratch is the better option for the planet, as it produces less
waste and I feel more creative freedom as a result.

The most memorable school activity for me was the Migrant Children’s Foundation’s (MCF)
Buddy Program. In past years, high school students could meet migrant students in person,
however, this program changed to being online due to Covid restrictions. During the eight week
program, high school students from international schools are paired with younger migrant
students to assist with academic work, read books, play games, or simply exchange
conversation in weekly video meetings. I participated in a mix of the aforementioned activities,
namely tutoring students in Mathematics. While the students were a bit shy at first, they
became more relaxed as we conversed. This experience made a very strong impact because I
could see the students progressing academically, even though I only spent 8 hours helping
them. The student’s friendliness and receptiveness to my suggestions made the experience
much more enjoyable, and encouraged me to sign up for another round of the MCF program.
