MAJOR GAME:

FOOTBALL
HISTORY
OF
THE GAME

Who invented football?

Walter Camp is considered the 'founder' of American football.
Camp was a great rugby player from Yale University who began to
transform rules of rugby for a more 'modern' style of play, which
eventually developed into the sport of football during the 1880's.
ORIGIN OF FOOTBALL
Football’s modern origins began in England more than 100 years
ago, in 1863. Rugby football and association football, once the
same thing, went their separate ways and the Football Association,
the first official governing body for the sport, was established.
The furthest back we can track football’s history is to China, as
early as the third century BC, where there are mentions of a game
resembling football in military manuals. The Han Dynasty played a
game called Tsu’ Chu, which involved kicking a ball through a 30-
40cm opening and into what we’d now see as a goal make of canes
with a net attached to it.

BRITAIN AND FOOTBALL

Records show that, in 1314, the Lord Mayor of London banned
football in the city due to it causing ‘chaos’. If you were caught
playing the game in London, you could be imprisoned. This was
elaborated on during the 100 years England and France were at
war, when Kings Edward II, Richard II, Hentry IV and Henry V
made the game illegal throughout the UK due to it ‘taking away
focus from practising military disciplines’, which were deemed
more useful. Despite opposition for the game, football thrived in
Britain from the eight to 19th centuries, however, a standardised
version of the  game was still a rarity as regional versions often
gained favour.

MAJOR
RULES OF
FOOTBALL

MAJOR RULES AND REGULATIONS:

All matches will be played according to the Laws of the Game with the
following exceptions:

 Teams will be told which way they are kicking at start of game.
 Teams cannot score directly from a kick off.
 There is no offside
 All free kicks and corners are direct and opposition must be 3 metres
away.
 Goal kicks to be taken anywhere inside penalty area. Opposition must
be 3 metres away and ball must leave penalty area for play to
recommence.
 Substitutions can be made at any time from the half way line.
Substituted player must leave the pitch before replacement goes on.
 Compulsory line up and handshake to finish.
 Games will be 10 minutes each way in duration with a 2 minute half
time
 There is a 6 minute gap between each game. Teams must be ready to
take the pitch as soon as the previous match has concluded.
 A size 4 football shall be used
 Teams to have a matching kits in school colours with goalkeeper
having a distinctly different coloured shirt – a bib may be used to
facilitate this differentiation
 Correct equipment i.e. long socks, shin pads, football is a
compulsory requirement

Scoring

To determine the overall final positions in the tournaments the points

allocated will be:

Win – 4 points, Draw – 2 points, Defeat – 1 point

The deciding criteria for “breaking” a tie is as follows:

1. Head to head result

2. Points difference (goal difference) (between tied teams)

3. Points scored (between tied teams)

4. Points against (between tied teams)

If there is still a tie:

5. Points difference (goal difference) (between all teams)

6. Points scored (between all teams)

7. Points against (between all teams)

The procedure for “breaking” a 3 way tie follows the same criteria as above

Once a tie break has been resolved additional ties will be resolved in the
same format using the same sequence of procedures beginning with the
head to head result (point 1)

There is no extra time scheduled for round robin games in football.

SKILLS
OF THE
GAME

Football is one of the world’s most basic games, with the objective of getting
the ball into the opposing team's goal. Except for the hands and arms, the
player can use any part of the body. However, the game is far more difficult
than it appears at the first glance because it involves many skills, tricks and
techniques.

1. BLOCKING: This blocking skill is done by driving your shoulders into

the midsection of your opponent and moving downfield. Block them
making a cover around quarterbacks to protect the pass of your
teammates. Now that’s a wonderful helping football skill to acquire for
a tight game.
2. PASSING: Passing accuracy is one of the most fundamental skills in a
football game. The feet should always have the power and accuracy to
pass the ball either to your teammates or to the strikers for a goal.
Passing skill is the one ultimate skill and football is devoid of an
accurate and precise pass.
3. DRIBBING SKILLS: The most efficient and basic skill for football is to
dribble the ball, keeping it in possession. Running with the ball is not
as simple as it sounds because it needs good control, balance, and
coordination.
4. SHOOTING: A perfect shot always ends up in the goal post, as a
perfect goal. Shooting is the act of dispatching the ball to the
opponent’s post. This is the ultimate thrust of the match because, at
the end of the day, goals count as your win. This fundamental skill of a
football game requires both technical and mental qualities.
5. TACKLING: A game of football is not as easy as we see it from the
gallery. To get the ball and kick it to the post, players have to do
numerous tits and tactics on the field. One of them is tackling skills. It
is not mere running and carrying the ball and applying shoulders, but
the way you tackle the opponent. Tackling skills are necessary to carry
on with the ball in your grip.
TERMS
OF
THE
GAME
TERMINOLOGIES: Some terms are used in football and other
games for the better execution of the game on the field. Some
important terminologies of the game are as follows:

 Attacker: A player whose job is to play the ball forward towards the
opponent's goal area to create a scoring opportunity.
 Back Heel: A ball kicked using the back (heel) of the foot.
 Back Pass: A pass that a player makes back toward their own goal, usually
made back to the goalkeeper. This is often a defensive move to restart a new
phase of play.
 Ball Carrier: The player in possession of the ball.
 Bending the Ball: Striking the ball off-center so that it travels in a curved
path, ideally for shots at goal.
 Bicycle Kick: A spectacular move in which a player jumps in the air in a
backflip motion, kicking the ball backward over their head. The name comes
from action which mimics their legs moving as if pedaling a bicycle.
 Center Spot: The spot marked at the center of the field from which the
kickoff is made.
 Confederation: Organization responsible for football in their region
(see acronyms)
 Corner Flag: The flag marking each of the four corners of the field.
 Cross: A pass played across the face of a goal.
 Defender: A player whose job is to stop the opposition attacking players
from goal scoring.
FIELD
DIAGRAM

The pitch is rectangular in shape. The longer sides are called

touchlines, and the shorter sides are called the goal lines. The two
goal lines must be between 45 and 90 m (50 and 100 yd) wide, and
be the same length. The two touchlines must be between 90 and
120 m (100 and 130 yd) long, and be the same length.

FIELD DIAGRAM:

CONCLUSION
Football is the world's most popular ball game in numbers of
participants and spectators. Some reasons that make football the
best sport are: Football includes mental and physical
stamina – Football is time-based and commonly it lasts for just
ninety minutes. And so, players remain literally on their toes.
Additionally, they utilize their minds for forming the ideal policy
at the correct time.  football affects us all in profound ways.
Whether it is by helping to develop new reflexes or muscle
memory while we play with it, by changing our perceptions of
controllable space while we play without it, or by simply
alleviating stress as a past-time.
