BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

Chalk is used in school classrooms and comes in slender

sticks; the demand for chalk is high as it is used in schools
for teaching, and chalk is also used by carpenters, tailors,
construction workers, furniture makers, surveyors. Starting
school chalk production requires no technical expertise or
special training; the equipment and raw materials needed to
produce are affordable and readily available. Research has
shown that tons of chalk is produce each year. Modern world
have whiteboards that just need markers and projectors. But
still, the origin of those is just a simple blackboard and a
piece of chalk. These chalks are still used mainly in schools
especially classrooms that don’t have projectors and white
screens. These are also used for teaching especially when
there is no electricity.

The specialists advise using a filtered mask over the

mouth and nose, taking frequent breaks outside, and using
sufficient ventilation in the workplaces if workers must work
around chalk dust for extended periods of time. On the other
hand, it is advised to use dustless chalk. There is some chalk
dust produced by this dustless chalk, but it is much heavier
and tends to fall to the ground rather than lingering in the
air. Chalk dust is produced during the writing with chalk and
subsequent cleaning of the chalkboard. To cut down on chalk
dust, several anti-dust chalks are produced. By reducing the
density or particle size of the dust, anti-dust chalk can
lessen particulate suspension.

Being said that, until now, many manufacturers of chalk

have been established producing many kinds of chalk. These
chalk products are made from eggshells and sea shells. These
days, chalks are not necessary anymore due to projectors and
power points, and as well as the situation we have right now
but there are some local areas that does not have the budget
and proper equipment needed for teaching. In the current
situation in Central Bicol State University of Agriculture,
wherein face to face classes are finally going back the
researchers observed that there are classes that lack chalk
and borrows from different years due to lack preparation for
it and according to the DepEd memorandum, the teachers
allowance for the expenses for teaching is 2000 Php which is
not enough to supply all the needs of teachers for teaching
for the whole school year. Due to these, researchers aim to
lessen the teachers’ expenses by producing a chalk that
doesn’t require a lot of money and aim to produce a chalk that
is organic and less harmful to the environment.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

a) To determine whether pili mesocarp are effective

ingredients in making chalk or not.
b) To make a much cheaper alternative for commercialized
chalk
c) To discover the different properties of pili mesocarp
which may be used for further studies.
d) To help the environment lessen the clutter from the Pili
shells.
e) To encourage the farmers to plant more Pili nut trees as

more people will discover it.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research methodology including

the materials to be used and procedure used in the study.

MATERIALS

To be able to conduct this study, the researchers will

provide Pili (Canariumovatum) mesocarp that serves the main
variable in the study. Pili (Canariumovatum) mesocarp and
hammer for breaking the exocarp in order for the researchers
to get the mesocarp. Can (today’s) for burning the Pili
(Canariumovatum) mesocarp. Mortar and pestle for powdering the
burned Pili (Canariumovatum) mesocarp. Measuring cup, spoon,
and container for mixing the powdered Pili (Canariumovatum)
mesocarp with the water and cornstarch. Aluminum foil for
forming the mixed water, cornstarch, and the powdered Pili
(Canariumovatum) mesocarp in the shape of a chalk.
PROCEDURE

First the researchers will gather the following materials

Pili (Canariumovatum) mesocarp, cornstarch, water, spoon,
container, tablespoon, can (today’s), measuring cup, aluminum
foil and mortar and pestle. Second, the researchers will break
the exocarp with the use of hammer so that the researcher can
get the mesocarp of the Pili (Canariumovatum). Third, the
researchers will burn the mesocarp in the can until it turns
into charcoal. Fourth, the researcher will pound and powdered
the Pili (Canariumovatum) mesocarp. Fifth, the researchers
will mix the powdered pili mesocarp, cornstarch and water in
this kind of concentration 50% Pili mesocarp ash and 50%
cornstarch. Sixth, the researchers will put the concentration
in the aluminum foil to form into chalk shape. And last, the
researchers will heat the concentration in the microwave to
harden, then wait for it to cool about 20 to 30 minutes.
