Task Three – University/Alternative Progression Preparation

You need to research and upload the following

1. Watch the video on Moodle regarding interview techniques for university

interviews - upload it to your Weebly page for Progression and identify key
issues (bullet points will do)

 Interview should be fairly relaxed.

 Prepare by looking up questions and maybe role playing them.
 Don’t be late, be early if you have to.
 Be confident and passionate.
 Always ask questions to look interested.
 Do a portfolio for more creative areas.

2. Follow up by analysing the part in the video regarding building a portfolio and
identify some of your own work which you could consider for your portfolio.
You can use material from outside College, too, if you feel it is suitable.

The work I could use for a portfolio could include my Weebly and Wix websites from
this course and all the work I’ve put on there but also artworks and animations and
designs I have made in my free time, such as my Instagram page and YouTube
channel.

3. The following tasks will depend on which your chosen route after college
might be

UNIVERSITY

Research up to FIVE possible university courses which may interest you and
identify the following for your top two choices where possible. This may take longer
than you think, so do not rush this section – the more you find out now will help you
later on. Upload your findings for each course to your Weebly page for
PROGRESSION. Remember – you can always apply for more than one course at
each university. As part of the UCAS process you will be asked to identify your first-
choice course and your ‘insurance’ choice (this is effectively your second choice if
you are not successful with your first choice.

Research the following aspects for each course where possible. This can be in note
form.

Open days (probably ‘virtual’ at the moment

Full name of courses

UCAS points (this is normally found in the ‘entry requirements’ section. Remember
that a Pass at UAL is 70 points, a Merit is 120 and a Distinction is 168)
Modules covered (normally this will be covered in some detail for Year One of most
university degree courses)

Lecturers (some universities will provide this)

Cost of course or courses (this will normally appear as ‘course fees’)

Length of course (the regular length of time is normally three years, unless you are
initially applying for a Foundation course, which are one year in length)

Accommodation location and possible cost (on campus or private renting – you
could do some initial research in to how much local student accommodation might be
in your chosen location of university)

Student finance (how much will the course cost in terms of tuition fees – this will be
paid back, normally in instalments once you have graduated and earning a certain
amount of money – check the presentation from Beth regarding Student Finance
which is located on Moodle in the Progression folder)

APPRENTICESHIP

Identify relevant apprenticeship opportunities which may exist in your desired

media sector.

Where are they located? Would you be prepared to relocate if required?

What experience, skills and knowledge might the apprenticeship require

How much money is on offer?

How long does the apprenticeship last for?

What qualifications might be required? Can you undertake the apprenticeship with
your Level 3 Extended Diploma? Do you require a degree in an appropriate
subject?

Do you require an interview for the apprenticeship?

Identify any other useful information which might help you gain an apprenticeship
opportunity.
ALTERNATIVELY

Research some possible Gap Year opportunities (there is a UK-based travel link
provided on Moodle to help you get started).

How might you use your Gap Year productively? This may include the following:

 Travel and employment

 Employment

 Voluntary work (this can also be combined with travel)

TRAVEL and EMPLOYMENT

Identify where you might want to travel to (this might be finance-dependent, Covid-
dependent and Brexit-dependent) and why? What would you get from doing this?

If you chose to travel and work, research possible jobs which you could do (this
might not be related to a chosen media job, but just for the life experience – grape
picking in southern France, or working on a beach in Australia, for instance)

Identify how long you could feasibly travel and work for (be realistic as this will
involve time spent away, financially providing for yourself etc.)

Identify any travel requirements you might need to apply for, such as visas.

What skills might you need for the job?

Identify skills which you have learned on the course which might be useful – these
can be technical, communication, personal
EMPLOYMENT

If your Gap Year concerns staying in the UK and working, then identify particular
jobs you may wish to do and why. These may or may not be related to a chosen
media job, but may give you some life skills and experience. Some employment
areas might be affected by Covid, so have some contingencies in place.

Identify the jobs or job.

What skills might you need for the job?

Identify skills which you have learned on the course which might be useful – these
can be technical, communication, personal

VOLUNTARY WORK

This might be something you could do either at home or abroad and could link with
travel planning.

Identify areas of voluntary work which might appeal to you and why. These may or
may not be connected to your chosen Media job role or industry.

Voluntary work is also a good thing to have on your CV for future use.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

If you have an alternative progression plan, such as freelancing or a business

opportunity, identify what this might be and outline a twelve-month plan of how
you will develop this area. You might want to include elements such as financial
requirements, equipment needed, promotion and marketing.

You may already have an opportunity to work in your chosen media areas; if so,
identify how you might see the first twelve months developing in terms of a job role,
training required, changes to your lifestyle which may include financial commitments,
possible relocation etc.
Whichever route or routes you choose, produce this as a post on your
Progression page for Weebly.
