Research Title: “Accessibility and Availability of School Facilities of Buenavista National High

School to Support Students’ Academic Performance”

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The physical facilities of a school significantly influence how students perform academically.

Any school system’s physical resources include everything from the school’s physical

infrastructure, including its buildings, classrooms, libraries, restrooms, offices, and other

components that are likely to affect the learner’s academic learnings.

This study aims to discuss regarding the school’s physical facilities availability and

accessibility towards the students. It presents the connection between the accessibility of

facilities and students’ academic achievements. This refers to how learners’ academic

results would be impacted by the lack of proper facilities and resources provided by the

schools. It has been observed that physical school infrastructures are a crucial element for

facilitating and stimulating educational initiatives. Students lack access to standard school

facilities like library resources or books, non-functional computers in ICT rooms, and

uncomfortable classroom seating may have an impact on their educational attainment. In

addition to providing shelter from the sun, rain, heat, and cold, a school should have

sufficient space, chairs, a lab, internet access, computers, and a variety of other physical

facilities and services that could improve students’ levels of motivation and academic

achievement.

Physical facilities must be readily available, according to recent studies. According to Ajayi

and Ayodele (2001), having access to these resources is crucial for improving the quality of

instruction and administration in the educational system.

In his study, Ademilua (2000) found that a lack of proper educational resources in Ekiti State

was a significant contributor to the poor academic performance of students. He also said that

the academic performance of kids would continuously deteriorate in the absence of proper

physical resources and facilities.

Cotton's research (2001) has shown that clean air, good light and a small quite comfortable

and safe environment are important for academic achievement.

Experience shows that inadequate physical facilities have some adverse effect on students’

interest to learn. Hence, this may invariably affect their academic performance. Good school

facilities support the educational enterprises. Enhancing educational facilities provides a

chance to effectively raise academic achievement.
