BRIGADA ESKWELA NARRATIVE REPORT

S.Y 2021-2022

Recognizing education as a primary national concern, the Department of Education

(DepEd) enjoins the entire community in addressing the needs in the education of youth.
DepEd’s Adopt-A-School Program gives private entities the opportunity to become active
partners by providing assistance either on a short-term or long-term basis to various
concerns in public education instituted through the passage of Republic Act 8525, the
program is based on the principles of volunteerism and multiple partnerships for education.
In its effort to bring the spirit of the Adopt-A- School Program to the community level and
maximize civil participation and utilize local resources to improve the schools, the
Department of Education launched the Brigada Eskwela.

Brigada Eskwela also known as National Schools Maintenance Week of the

Department of Education started 2003. This activity aims to tap the community year-round in
cleaning school grounds and repairing broken school furniture. It will also contribute to the
increase in participation rate, decrease dropout rate and increase academic performance of
public school children.

Brigada Eskwela is DepEd’s model of genuine public and private partnership

in action. It is the best time for the whole community to familiarize themselves with school
concerns. The participation of the whole community to do repairs and clean-up of schools
prior to the opening effectively reviving the dying Bayanihan spirit. Millions of volunteers
comprising of teachers, parents, employees, local government units, alumni associations,
civic organizations and even the highest officials in the government have joined this activity.

Brigada Eskwela is done a week before the opening of classes so that on the first
day of classes, learners can concentrate on their lessons instead of cleaning the school.
Volunteers during Brigada Eskwela do minor repair works such as cementing of path walk,
painting of walls and roofs, fixing leaking water pipes, repairing damaged chairs, desks,
furniture, cleaning of school grounds, replacing of broken window glass, and replacing
ceiling boards, among others

Brigada Eskwela does not accept cash solicits. What it solicits are cleaning/repair
materials and other non-cash assistance for the repairing and maintenance of the school.
Some the materials that they donate are hard broom, soft broom, dust pan, pail, and garden
tools. They also donate paints, hollow blocks, cements, sand, and other construction
materials.

Beyond the material benefits generated from this worthwhile endeavor in the form of
better classroom and campuses, the school also benefits from the goodwill generated when
people exert efforts for the common good-work hand-in –hand with other responsible
members of the community.

Brigada Eskwela conveys to the pupils / students the essence of unity and
cooperation in the community and of humanity, which forms the core of the Filipino spirit.

It’s been noted that different Secretaries in the Department of Education adopted and
supported the Brigada Eskwela because of its advantages. In fact, Brigada Eskwela won an
Anvil Award of Merit given by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, the only
government line Agency to win an award this year in the prestigious search.

This year’s Brigada Eskwela was scheduled on the 1st day of June to the 31th of
October. “Bayanihan Para Sa Paaralan” is the 2021 BRIGADA ESKWELA`s theme. For
this year, the Brigada Eskwela and Oplan Balik Eskwela’s the usual activities of DepEd to
prepare for the opening of classes, were reconfigured to be locally which ran last August 3
until September 30, 2021.

The joint OBE and BE national virtual kickoff program was hosted by SDO Santiago via
Facebook and Youtube livestreaming on August 23, 2021.

Brigada Eskwela deviated from the traditional concept of physical cleaning, painting,
repainting, and doing minor repairs in schools but instead prioritized preparations and
strengthened partnership engagement was ensured that quality basic education continued
despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.

Stakeholders supported the initiative by donating thermal scanners; hand sanitizing

equipment or materials; and printing of COVID-19 and sanitation/proper hand washing

hygiene information materials to aid BE and OBE in introducing protection and health
protocols to learners and teachers.

BE also engaged partners in the promotion and provision of learning options such as
local radio and TV stations and other available media, and the printing of self-learning
modules for distance learning, as a form of partnership delivering the basic education
curriculum in the time of COVID-19.

Tiring moments during the Brigada activities during pandemic were easily eased
when we saw that the school is very much ready and well prepared for the opening of
classes this school year 2021-2022. Through the initiative of the school head and our
stakeholders

We can say that BRIGADA ESKWELA activities were done successfully because we
possessed the FOUR-WORD FORMULA FOR SUCCESS:”MAKE YOURSELF MORE
USEFUL”.
