Outline
• Overview
• Computer literacy
• What is computer
• Information processing life cycle
• Components of computer
• Software development “computer software”
• Advantages and disadvantages of computer
Overview
• In the workplace, employees use computers to create
correspondence such as: e-mail, memos, letters, and
generate reports…
• As technology continues to advance, computers are
becoming more a part of everyday life.
• We can see that people spend hours of using
computers.
Computer literacy
• So, we can see that computer knowledge and
understanding is important to success in today’s
world.

• Computer literacy: Knowledge and understanding

of computers and their uses.
What is computer?

• Electronic device operating under the control of

instructions stored in its own memory, that can
accept data, process the data according to specified
rules, produce results, and stores the results for
future work.
Understanding Your Computer
Computers are Data Processing Devices
• Perform four major functions
• Input: Gathers data, allows entering data
• Process: Manipulates, calculates, or organizes data
• Output: Displays data and information
• Storage: Saves data and information
Information processing life cycle
• Instruction: steps that tell the computer how to
perform a particular task.
• The computer holds the data, information, and
instruction in storage for future use.
• Communication: most computers today can
communicate with other computers, so
communication is an essential element of the
information processing cycle.
What kind of task a computer can do?
• Store information.
• Permit searches.
• Calculations.
• Control other devices.
• Entertainment.
Components of computer “computer system”

• Hardware: electric, electronic, and mechanical

components.
• Software: Consists of a series of instructions that
tells the computer what to do and how to do it.
• Users
Hardware
• Input: Hardware used to enter data and instructions.
• Output: Hardware that conveys information to one or
more people
• System unit: Case that contains the electronic components
of the computer that are used to process data.
• Storage devices : Storage holds data, instructions, and
information for future use
• Communication devices: Hardware component that
enables a computer to send and receive data, instructions,
and information to and from one or more computers
System unit
❖ Two main components are connected to the motherboard:
1. Processor: Also called a Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The electronic component that interprets and carries out
the basic instructions that operate the computer.
2. Memory: Consists of electronic components that store
instructions waiting to be executed and data needed by
those instructions.
Software
• Consists of a series of instructions that tells the computer
what to do and how to do it.
• The user interacts with a program through its user
interface.
• You can interact with the software using text, graphics,
and visual images such as icons.
User

• Anyone who use the hardware and the software to do

some task
Advantages of using computer
• Speed
• Storage
• Communication

Disadvantages of computer
• Violation of privacy
• Health risk
Terminologies
• Algorithm: A set of steps that defines how a task is
performed
• Program: A representation of an algorithm
• Programming: The process of developing a program
• Software: Programs and algorithms
