Developing and Implementing the Street Light Controlling

System

Abstract

Nowadays, many street lights are observed to be turned on during the evenings or nights, and
they remain switched on throughout the night. This wastes a lot of energy because lights stay
on even when they are not needed. The primary goal of Smart Street Lighting is to reduce
energy usage and save money. When there is not a single vehicle on the road. The goal is to
create a smart street light system that only turns on when it has needed and turns off when it
is not. The main goal is to create a street lighting system employing laser sensors, ZigBee
wireless technology, and a microprocessor. As a result, the system is scalable and reliable.

Using a sensor To detect vehicle movement on highways and turn on only a block of road
lights in front of it, saving energy by turning off the lights. By utilizing ZigBee to detect the
state of a streetlight via a node with a distant concentrator, the street light may be controlled
and monitored. The lighting system is linked to the microcontroller. The data is sent from the
sensor unit to the microcontroller, which controls the street light dynamically. It has been
discovered that the sensor's performance for detecting objects and pedestrians is 89.87
percent.

This can save 38.1 percent on electricity and 48 percent on lighting maintenance. The result
of proposed approach not enough remarkable however it is convincing as the further research
need to be extended by using suitable sensors for detecting the street light failure, and then
sending an SMS to the control department through a GSM modem for suitable activities.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

The project aims were to reduce the side effects of the current street lighting system, and find
a solution to save power. In this project the first thing to do, is to prepare the inputs and
outputs of the system to control the lights of the street. The prototype as shown in Fig. 9 has
been implemented and works as expected and will prove to be very useful and will fulfill all
the present constraints if implemented on a large scale. Fig.9 Prototype of street light system
Fig. 9 shows the street light system, from the figure it can be seen that, all lighting column
are OFF, because there is no any object passes through the street, even though the weather is
night. This is the idea of using the microcontroller to control each lighting column alone.
