1 ABSTRACT

Technology has become very important and indispensable in everyday life, taking over
the means of communication, leisure, means of payment and work, being increasingly
demanded in all areas of society, being part of human life and making us almost entirely
dependent on its use. In society, the use of technology, when it started, was something very
unknown where few could enjoy it, but over time it became a tool that with the internet, became
widely used and known in the world, on the other hand, there are those who could not keep up
with the change and were forgotten and left behind, others no longer cared about their growth
and continued using tools that today have been replaced by technology, the fact is that both the
elderly who have technophobia and those who just didn't keep up were harmed and an
explanation is needed so that they can have an understanding of the issue and thus help for an
intervention to be carried out in order to demystify the use of technology among the elderly.
With the advent of the pandemic caused by covid-19, the elderly became more reclusive
because they are proven to be an age group at high risk of contagion and mortality, another
important factor is how the elderly were treated over time, while there was the technological
advance happened the population aging, something that harmed the elderly and their insertion in
technological activities. For an understanding of the factors that lead to technophobia to occur,
an understanding of the cases is necessary to reach the conclusion as stated by Taiuani
Marquini: “To understand how the elderly population deals with the challenges of technology
and what are the variables that influence the use and in accepting them, it is essential to take into
account the characteristics of the elderly as well as the technologies”. In this way, they started to
have greater technological participation to communicate with their families, seek relationships
and as a way of life, even so, there is a difficulty in the way information is transmitted, harming
once again the accessibility of the elderly.

2. INTRODUCTION
Technology is very important and indispensable in everyday life, taking care of the
means of communication, leisure, means of payment and work, being increasingly demanded
in all areas of society, being part of human life and making us almost entirely dependent on its
use. What makes it even more notorious the fact that many people do not use it, not only
because of lack of interest, but also because of fear. Based on this observation, the term
“technophobia” was created, which is the fear and/or rejection of using and handling
3
technological devices, this fear being explained by cultural, historical and psychological
reasons (Portal São Francisco).

3 GOALS

3.1 MAIN GOAL

To analyze how technophobia harms the elderly in the use of technology today.

3.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

Identify the reasons for the persistence of technophobia in contemporary society; Find out
which aspects can be related to the difficulty of the elderly with technology. Collecting data
from 2011 to 2021, based on bibliographic research, drawing a parallel between the data
collected and the difficulties of the elderly with technology.

4 THEORETICAL REFERENCE

Fear is something present in all people when it comes to something new or that has
not yet been learned, but when fear is no longer something natural, such as the fear of
animals, heights, among others, it becomes a concern, where it is It is necessary to issue an
alert and try to understand the reason and, if it really is something to be concerned about
(SILVA; EMERSON, THIAGO, DA, 2017). It comes to the conclusion through an
exploratory and descriptive research, where a study made by a questionnaire among people
from 35 to 79 years old. He states that a large part of this public feel or have felt some
discomfort, anxiety and insecurity when handling a technological device.

Another important factor is how the elderly were treated over time that, while listening
to the technological advance, population aging happened, something that harmed the elderly
and their insertion in technological activities, so that an understanding of the factors that lead
to technophobia occurs is An understanding of the cases is necessary to reach the conclusion
as stated by Taiuani Marquini: “To understand how the elderly population deals with the
challenges of technology and what are the variables that influence their use and acceptance,
it is essential to take into account the characteristics of the elderly as well as technologies.”
(RAYMUNDO; MARQUINI, TAIUANI. 2013, p 8).

4
With the advent of the high pandemic by covid-19, the elderly inmates due to the
characteristics of characteristics such as the age group, contagion and mortality. In this way,
their most sought-after relatives were more likely to communicate with their relatives,
participating still and as relatives of their relatives, once impairing the accessibility of them,
as observed by Fábio Daniel.

Resources are present in everyone's life,

technological possibilities are increasingly
within reach, and the positive impacts they can
cause to the elderly are impressive, as isolation
can become less aggressive from them.
However, it is important to know how to handle
applications using languages that are not always
accessible to the elderly population. (OLD;
FÁBIO, DANIEL, 2020, p.2).
5 METHODOLOGY

5.1 Characterization of the research

The types of research will be done; Bibliographic and Explanatory

5.2 Search location

It Will be done via the internet on the computer (laptop), at the academic's residence.

5.3 Data collection instruments

It will be carried out through the quantitative and qualitative observational method and
bibliographic research.

5.4 Data analysis

It will be analyzed through a bibliographic investigation, comparison of collected data and use
of deductive logic

6 RESULT AND DISCUSSION

To get started, in this research we decided to talk to some elderly to get a better understanding
why many of them have technophobia, in that we talked and discussed with them about this
problem.
And in that we come to the conclusion that a lot of them end up having a certain fear of
5
technology because of a certain prejudice that they end up suffering from younger people and
also because it ends up not being something of the reality in which they grew up we arrived in
our discussion with the elderly people we interviewed.

7 CONCLUSION

To conclude, we realized that the elderly are able to enjoy technology like any other person, but
due to a certain prejudice and difficulty, they end up suffering from technophobia, therefore, the
conclusion we reached at the end of this research is that the elderly are able to use technology
but suffer some difficulties, something that can be circumvented with the assistance of another
person.
