LECTURE ASSIGNMENT 1&2

QUIZ# 1: Search about different approaches to community development (Give at least 5 with
brief descriptions/definition

1.    Participatory Planning

In a participatory planning type of approach, anyone who has a stake in the intervention has a
voice, either in person or through a representative. The process of this approach involves the transfer
of authority from the state government (includes the three branches: executive, legislative, and
judicial) to the local level government which includes municipalities, local service districts, and rural
communities. This strategy seeks to empower marginalized local groups, incorporate local knowledge
systems into project design, and create a two-way learning process between the project and the
community. It also aims to discover the perceived needs of the people living in the area. The main
goal of this approach is to pinpoint pressing issues and provide creative solutions that would promote
community development.

2.    Faith-based community development

This strategy is the most well-known community development approach out of all of them. This
refers to the participation of faith-based organizations in activities intended to rebuild local
communities, launch sustainable economic development programs, attract investment, increase
wealth, and promote entrepreneurship. Faith-based organizations will collaborate with the local
government or establish a distinct nonprofit community development corporation in order to carry out
the initiatives. Since churches are a constant presence and church members typically reside in the
surrounding community, this type of approach can be easily implemented.

3.    Asset-based community development

This approach is another one of the better choices to use for community development. Utilizing
one's own ability and the abilities of the community's members includes putting the community's
assets—rather than its needs or problems—front and center. With this strategy, it will often provide
community members an incentive or encouragement to get more active in local government,
education, or business. Additionally, this type of approach will utilize a variety of skills and resources
that currently belong to community members, organizations, and institutions. The main objective of
this form of approach is to address specific problems, take appropriate action, and achieve certain
goals to improve that community.

4.    Community Organizing

This strategy entails creating activities while boosting people's self-confidence in their capacity
for active engagement in and contribution to community development. The goal of this strategy is to
empower local residents to actively use the resources that are at their availability rather than
passively receiving care services. The goals of this particular strategy are community self-reliance,
enhanced quality of life, and human empowerment.
5.    Community-based participatory research

The objective of this approach, also referred to as community-based participatory research or

CBPR, is to address the need for improved intervention research methods and approaches
addressing health disparities as well as to strengthen the science of community engagement in
addressing health disparities, particularly in socially disadvantaged population groups. This
acknowledges the strengths of each partner, scientific researchers from various fields, and
community members working together on all project-related tasks during the needs assessment,
planning, design of the research intervention, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of
community-level interventions processes. This makes sure that the interventions made are suitable
for the requirements of the community.
QUIZ# 2: Select one out of your five searched approaches and make a simple concept
map/diagram on how to achieve community development based on the article from the link
provided

In the given article, it seems that leprosy is emerging despite how hard scientists have worked
to eradicate it over the years. Despite the use of medication therapy and other treatments as well as
increased community awareness, this recurrent disease has not yet been completely eradicated.
Therefore, a community-based participatory approach should be used to aid in achieving community
development towards establishing deep understanding about this particular disease.

COMMUNITY-BASED PARTICIPATORY APPROACH

PROJECT DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION

The project aims to achieve successful elimination
strategy through preventative therapy for contacts of new
leprosy, improvements in diagnostic tools, strict epidemiological
surveillance, and response systems to monitor progress. In line
with this, a memorandum should be release all throughout every
region in our country which will then be relayed to respective
health centers near every community, and BHW in respective
health centers should gather data of leprosy cases in their
barangay for it to be submitted in the DOH for the basis of action.

PARTNER ENGAGEMENT
In partnership with the barangay health officials, data
gathered by the students with regards to the newly cases of
leprosy should be reported immediately to the respective
health centers then to the Department of Health for it to be
relayed to the higher health governing bodies like the World
Health Organization for further monitoring and for it to
contact respective organizations under them around the
globe.

DATA COLLECTION
The data should be from ideally not more than 10 families who
have seen signs and symptoms of leprosy through a focus group
discussion. In addition, it could also be that the data will be from
the health centers.
DATA ANALYSIS
In analyzing the data, the method that will be utilized
is Thematic Analysis. This focuses on identifying patterns
and themes out from experiences of families who have
seen signs and symptoms of leprosy. Hence, this will help
to get the common theme out from each family’s responses
to answer the study’s research questions.

REPORTING
The results/findings of the study conducted will be
reported to the community’s respective health centers. After
which, the researchers along with the people in health centers
will plan for a way in which information will be disseminated for
project planning and implementation. Furthermore, the data
reported by the researchers can be used by that health center
to present it to the Department of Health for treatment
management plan that’ll address the reoccurring leprosy
disease.
