Structure: Mass Noun and Count Noun, Possessive Noun, Collective Noun!

Nouns are divided into two categories, which is the mass noun and count noun.
There are nouns which we can be counted and we cannot. We use quantifiers or
counters in order to quantify them.

What’s In

Identify the underlined word in each sentence. Write MN if it is mass noun and CN
if it is count noun. Write your answer before the number. Number one is done for
you.

Read the short paragraph.

Grandma’s special haluhalo is the best haluhalo for me. And I know how she
prepares it. First, she puts slices of cooked banana and some bits of nata de coco.
Next, she adds a spoonful of sugar, spoonful of ube jam, and a slice of leche flan.
Next, she puts shaved ice, and a half cup of evaporated milk. Lastly, she sprinkled
crispy pinipig on top.

What are the ingredients in grandma’s special haluhalo?

Nata de coco, leche flan, ube jam, sugar, milk, shaved ice, and crispy pinipig are all
mass noun or uncountable nouns.

✓ Mass noun or Uncountable nouns are nouns that cannot be counted


individually.
Examples: sugar milk ube jam
✓ Uncountable nouns do not have plural form, it is always on singular form.

What words were added to the mass nouns?

a slice of, a spoonful of, a bit of, and a cup of are the words added to the mass
nouns.

Do you know what are these words?

These are called mass noun quantifiers.

✓ Quantifiers or counters are used to quantify the mass or uncountable


nouns.

Examples:

1. Add a spoonful of sugar on top of ensaymada.

2. Give me a piece of butter please.

✓ We use much and little for mass nouns or things we cannot count.

Examples:

1. How much water did you spill on the floor?

2. Put a little butter in the pan.

Examples of Quantifiers:

Now let’s move on to count noun or countable nouns.

✓ Count noun or countable nouns- are nouns which can be counted


individually or can be separated in units.
✓ Count nouns can either be singular or plural in form by adding s or es.

✓ We use number before the noun.
Examples:
1. Every day I ate two apples.
2. Add four eggs to add some flavor.
✓ We use many, few when we refer to count nouns or things we can count.
Examples:

1. How many balloons did you bought for the party?


2. I invited a few friends to my party.

A man wanted to sell his son’s donkey because he needs to buy his wife’s
medicine who is very ill. He brought the donkey to the market. First, he went to a
friend’s store.

“Could you buy my donkey?” he asked. “No, I don’t need a donkey,” the
friend replied.
So, the man went to Francis’ bookshop. “Could you buy my donkey?” he
asked. “No, I even have a truck that carries my goods,” Francis said.
Then, he saw Peter’s pet shop. “Your donkey is old enough for a pet,”
complained by Peter.

As the man tries to find someone who could buy his donkey, he met the
baker’s wife. “My husband is looking for a donkey to carry the sack of flour from
the port,” she said. The man visits the baker and sold his son’s donkey. He said,
“I’m so happy, I will now go to the market and buy medicine.”

Read the phrases below which was taken from the paragraph.

What did you observe in the phrases that you have read? What was added after the
noun?

There is an apostrophe -s (‘s) added before the noun.

A noun shows ownership is what we called possessive noun.

A possessive noun always comes before the noun that belongs to it.

✓ A possessive noun is used to show possession or ownership.

Remember the 3 rules:


1. Singular nouns are formed by adding an apostrophe -s. (‘s)
Examples: Jerry’s hat, Niki’s skirt, Cat’s food

✓ Joey’s basketball team won the game yesterday.


✓ The dog’s house is too big for him to roam around.

2. Singular nouns that end with -s, add only an apostrophe


after -s. (s’)
Examples: James’ bag, Carlos’ report

3. Plural nouns that end with -s, add an apostrophe after the -s to
show ownership or possession. (s’)
For special plural, such as men, children, women, geese, add an (‘s)
to make it a possessive noun.
Examples: babies’ toys, witches’ brooms, animals’ cage

What’s New

Do you know what unity means? You’ll find out as you read the story.

Unity
A battalion of ants live in the forest was busy collecting food.

That is their daily routine, they don’t stop collecting until they have enough
food supply for rainy days.
After the long busy day, “we have enough food that can supply us during
rainy days, you may now take a rest and relax.” The Queen Ant said.

Ants decided to have a big banquet. The ant band played and a choir of
ants sang, everyone is having fun. The party stop because a swarm of flies
appeared in the forest.
The ants were unprepared and shocked, the swarm of flies is ready to attack.
“Run to the holes! So, none of you would die!” The Queen ant shouted. She has a
clever idea of how to defeat the swarm of flies.

“Fill the ground with glue, so flies would be trapped and they can never let
go.” The Queen Ant ordered. When the swarm of flies’ attacks, all of them were
trapped. Everyone was joyful, they defeated the flies and none of them died.

“Unity is the key, Congratulation to all!” The Queen Ant said.

Collective nouns – is a word used to name the group or whole unit of
persons, animals, places, or object.

A collective noun is singular in form even though it names anything which


is two or more than two.

We use these collective nouns in referring to:

Group of people - class, audience, team, crowd, staff

Group of places - chain, nation, country

Group of animals - herd, flock, swarm, tribe, school, pride, litter

Group of things - collection, set, series, carton, bouquet, bunch
