Lesson 4: More About Me (Part 1)

- The lesson introduces students to simple structures for expressing likes and dislikes. It focuses
around the topics on hobbies and food and drinks.

Lesson Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

a. Memorize vocabulary related to hobbies and food and drinks

b. Construct simple sentences using “xǐhuan” to express the things they like and “bu xǐhuan” to
express the things that they dislike.
c. Apply learned structures by asking others about their likes and dislikes
d. Practice vocabulary and listening skills by watching and listening to a video

A. Warm-up: Read the words in their Pinyin and English forms

B. Conversation:

Ana: Hao-hao, nǐ qù nǎ lǐ?

(Hao-hao, where are you going?)
Dàwèi: ō, nǐ hǎo dàwèi. wŏ yào gēn yī xiē péng yŏu yī qĭ qù yóuyǒng.
(oh, hi David. i am about to go swimming with some friends.)
Ana: Wā! wǒ hěn xǐhuan yóu yǒng.
(Wow! I like swimming.)
Dàwèi: Wǒ yě hěn xǐhuan. Gēn women yīqǐ qù.
(Me too. Come with us.)
Ana: Wǒ jīntiān qù bù liǎo. wǒ hěn máng.
(I can’t today. i am very busy. )
Dàwèi: Nà women xiàcì qù yóuyǒng ba.
(Then let’s go swimming next time.)
Ana: Hǎo de. hǎo de.

C. Expressing Likes and dislikes with “xǐhuan”

- Use “xǐhuan” to express a lot of things that you like, add the word “bù” to express the things
that you dislike

D. Structures
- In constructing sentences with “xǐhuan”, follow the same S-V-O pattern in English.

Exercise 1: Translate the following sentences using the words in the chart above.

1. I like surfing the internet.

2. They like listening to music.
3. My younger sister likes eating dumplings.
4. My dad like playing basketball.
5. My teacher likes travelling.

- To negate the sentence and express that you dislike something, add “bù", which makes the
structure S- bù-V-O
