MODULE 7 - TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS

DATA AND OBSERVATIONS

Activity 1

Reaction Reaction
Substances + heat + water with red litmus with blue litmus
will dissolve in
mg burns water and will turn into
Magnesium will remain blue
so bright produce blue
acidic oxide
will ignites will dissolve
and forms to water and
Sulfur will remain red will turn into red
sulfor produce basic
oxide oxide

Activity 2
A,. Observations while heating copper carbonate
-
Heat causes copper carbonate to decompose, releasing copper oxide and carbon dioxide. Heat
transforms copper carbonate, which has a green color, into copper oxide, which has a black tint.

B. Observations while heating the copper sulfate pentahydrate

-The loss of water from blue copper sulfate causes copper sulfate pentahydrate to turn white
when heated. It contains water of hydration that transforms into water vapour when heated,
leaving white anhydrous copper sulphate.

Activity 3
A. Metal displacement

Solution Metal Observations

When you add the aluminum piece to the hydrochloric
HCl + Al acid solution, this reaction won't happen right away.
copper will not react with hcl
HCl + Cu
mg will fizz in hcl and colourless bubbles of hydrogen
HCl + Mg are given

1
Zinc willreactsto hcl by releasing small bubbles
HCl + Zn

B. Nonmetal displacement

Solution Halogen Observations

Chlorine will replace bromine in a displacement
NaBr chlorine process when it interacts with sodium bromide.

A violet coloring is produced when chlorine water is

NaI chlorine added to an aqueous solution of sodium iodide when
chloroform is present

Activity 4

Reactants Observations
Lead chromate, a yellow precipitate, is produced
1] K2CrO4 when potassium chromate reacts with lead nitrate

Pb(NO3)2
The production of barium sulphate causes the
2] BaCl2 reaction described above to produce a precipitate
Na2SO4 that is white in color.
