How will you describe your artwork

a. Elements of Art

Elements are the tools that artists use to make art. Some of the elements that I
prominently utilize are constructive lines, geometric shapes, and color. A parol is
typically formed from different lines and shapes to create movement. Constructive
lines are measured, geometric, directional, and angular. These were utilized to
mimic the movement and direction of lights in a parol to create a pattern. Geometric
shapes were utilized since I used circles, different variations of triangles, and of
course 2 four-point stars. Lastly color, the colors use vibrant Christmas colors that
are typically used in creating parols.

b. Principles of Art

The principles of art are said to govern and organize the elements to create a visual
tempo or beat. I used almost all since it is needed in the art piece. But, what
principles of art is mostly seen on parols are patterns/ repetition/rhythm. It is usually
used to create harmony and unity within the piece even if we use different colors
and movements. It offers a variety of object/ shapes that creates amazing visuals.
The piece also utilizes radial symmetry and emphasis to make certain parts of the
parol pop out.

What kind of radial design did you use for the star and why did you use it over the
others?

I used radial symmetry, utilizing a symmetrical balance. I find it much more

aesthetically pleasing to look at and it gives off a relaxing vibe. Most of the parols
utilize this because it shows orderliness and formality. The patterns make sense if
similar objects/ shapes were put on both sides.

How do you promote parol amidst of pandemic? What is the significance of parol of
the Kapampangan identity?

Parols are a Christmas Filipino staple. It is not only for design purposes but is a
product of our rich history and cultural identity. I would promote our native parols
through the use of social media. Since, a lot of old parol makers here are struggling,
especially since the pandemic hit. I would create a page (Instagram, Facebook,
YouTube, TikTok) for them, upload small vlogs of them making it, do a DIY
photoshoot with them and their products. The availability of the equipment and
software to use is not a problem since I could provide for it. I would also ask my
friends if they would like to volunteer to help, approach our family members whom
have connections if they want to buy in bulk or a few for their own homes. Parols
are significant especially to Kapampangan since it all started here. They are hand-
crafted, delicate, and beautifully made with blood, sweat, and tears.
