OVERVIEW:
This module serves as an eye-opener to the learner who already doesn’t know the different folk songs in our
country, specifically in our locality. The topics that is being taught here will make our students adopt and can be shared to
others.

LESSON 1: Folk Songs in Lowland Luzon


OBJECTIVES:
1.Identify the musical characteristics of Folk Songs;
2.Enumerate the functions of a Folk Song;
3.Analyze the characteristics of Folk Songs; and
4.Explain how the cultural background affects the musical elements and characteristics of Folk Songs.

INTRODUCTION:

Folk songs may be heard all over the Philippines. Each region or province of the country has a folk song that it
can call its own. These folk songs show the creativity of Filipinos in expressing themselves, depict the kind of living they
had during their time, and manifest their appreciation for love and beauty. Today, folk songs are still being preserved and
performed.

Folk songs are created by the people of a locality, and are passed orally through generations. They often have
different versions and are made up of simple and modal melody. They usually composed of 4-line stanzas with time
signature of either ¾,4/4, or 2/4. Because folk songs are commonly passed verbally form one singer to another, the
original composers usually get lost in the way.
These are some of the folk songs that Philippines have; a. Ballad, b. Lullaby, c. Songs of Friendship, d. Love and
Courtship Songs, and e. Humor Songs.

ACTIVITY 4. Group the class into 5. Research and choose other folk songs from lowland Luzon. Present your selected
folk songs to the class with either a live accompaniment. After your performance, give a simple interpretation of the song
and explain the reason why you chose the said song.
SUMMARY:
 Folk songs are songs that came from the people of a locality. Their lyrics reflect the simple and common life of
Filipinos, and they are usually passed orally from generation to generation.
 Folks songs can be classified as:
o Ballads
o Lullabies
o Songs of friendship
o Love and courtship songs
o Humor songs

LESSON 2: SACRED MUSIC


OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the musical characteristics of Folk Songs;

3. Analyze the characteristics of Folk Songs; and
4. Explain how the cultural background affects the musical elements and characteristics of Folk Songs.

INTRODUCTION:
ACTIVITY 1. Look at the picture being shown on the video. Afterwards, students are able to identify and share what they
know about the events or the pictures.

Music plays a significant part in providing solemnity and life during religious celebrations. Church music played
during these occasions is called sacred music.Various examples of sacred music are often heard in the following religious
activities.

1. Mass
The celebration of the mass was one of the most
significant contributions of our Spanish ancestors when
they arrived in the 16th century. The original music sung
during the
masses
written in
Latin. Since
then until as of date, songs form a significant part of the mass
celebrations.

2. Senakulo
The senakulo is a Filipino re-enactment of Jesus Christ’s
suffering and death. Music accompanies the delivery of dialogues by the characters.

2. Pasyon
Pasyonia a 6th century epic poem chanted during the
Holy Week, starting from Palm Sunday until Easter
Sunday. It tells about the life and sufferings of Jesus
Christ as narrated in the Bible. The verses are structured in five-line stanzas, with each line containing eight
syllables.

3. Salubong
It is a ritual event held during Easter Sunday. It portrays Christ’s meeting with His mother Mary after his
resurrection. It is commonly held in the
church yard under a specially prepared arch
where the veiled image of the Virgin Mary
is placed.

4. Flores de Mayo

It is a festival held during the whole month of


May as a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The festival is also known as pag-aalay. The
festival culminates in a procession featuring
young girls offering flowers for Mother Mary.

5. Santacruzan
Santacruzanis a pageant usually held on the

last day of flores de mayo. This pageant


commemorates the search for the true cross in
Jerusalem. Therefore, the procession features a lady
dressed as Queen Helena, bearing a crucifix which
symbolizes her Holy Search.

SUMMARY:
 Sacred music is one of the reflections of religious influences that the Spaniards have bequeathed to the
Filipinos. The Sacred songs used for spiritual purposes are still kept alive in most religious activities and
events.
 In the Philippines, sacred music are commonly heard in the following religious events:
o Mass
o Senakulo
o Pasyon
o Salubong
o Flores de Mayo
o Santacruzan
