A.

Fiction is mysterious but it is made to enlighten the mind of the people regardless of the who they
really are. (“and so discreet that it seems designed to light up things too delicate, too
mysterious, for the great luminary.”)
It is a mystery that will never be understood by a person who is closed minded, a person whose
beliefs were fixed on something that he only wanted, and a person who chose to limit his mind,
just like Abbé Marignan in the beginning of the story. He was a man whose beliefs are on pure
logic and he only believe on the things that he used to believe. In short, his mind is limited. But
then, as soon as he took time to appreciate the night, his mind was opened and he started to
understand things that are beyond his imagination. (“he perceived that one of those questions
which he sometimes put to himself, was now being born.”) Indeed, fiction is something that
we have to accept in order for us to have our own reality.

B. I found two themes in the story and those are divinity and the perceptions in life. Divinity is one
of the themes since Abbé Marignan is a priest and his faith to God was really amazing. He
believes that everything on Earth was created by God in favor of the needs of the human being.
On the other hand, perceptions in life is also a theme because the perception of the priest at the
beginning is only believing on his own beliefs but at the end of the day, the story proved that our
perceptions in life can be changed and that changing of perceptions is the social reality that every
human being can experience.
The intersection of reality and fiction is that in the beginning, the priest is very certain on his
beliefs until he saw his niece with his lover and that changed everything. Personally, the story
also changed my way of thinking. The intersection was executed effectively that it gave an impact
to me.

C. Based on my research about Guy de Maupassant’s style of writing, I found that he writes stories
in a very naturalistic way. It shows the inevitable consequences on people’s behavior. His fictions
are also characterized by its realistic content. He uses people with desperate actions such as
prostitutes, soldiers, priests, etc., as the characters just like Abbé Marignan as a priest who
desperately want to rely on his own belief. But then, personally, I have observed that apart from
the said writing style of Guy de Maupassant, he is also an influencer through his works. He uses
his stories as an eye opener to the reader. As what I have said a while ago, the Moonlight made
me change my own way of thinking. He also does not write for the sake of writing but he makes
sure that there will be a lesson in the end of the story and I’m sure that these writing styles that
manifest in him are the reason of why he is a well-known author from the history until now.
