GREEKS
Ruler of the Heaven
and Earth
Zeus is the god of the sky in ancient
Greek mythology. As the chief Greek
deity, Zeus is considered the ruler,
protector, and father of all gods and
humans. Zeus is often depicted as an
older man with a beard and is
represented by symbols such as the
lightning bolt and the eagle.
Queen of the Heaven
Hera is the goddess of marriage, women
and family, and the protector of women
during childbirth. In Greek mythology, she
is queen of the twelve Olympians and
Mount Olympus, sister and wife of Zeus,
and daughter of the Titans Cronus and
Rhea. One of her defining characteristics
in myth is her jealous and vengeful nature
in dealing with any who offend her,
especially Zeus' numerous adulterous
lovers and illegitimate offspring.
ROMANS
Jupiter is usually thought to have
originated as a sky god. His identifying
implement is the thunderbolt and his
primary sacred animal is the eagle, which
held precedence over other birds in the
taking of auspices and became one of
the most common symbols of the Roman
army (see Aquila).
Juno, in Roman religion, chief goddess
and female counterpart of Jupiter, closely
resembling the Greek Hera, with whom
she was identified. With Jupiter and
Minerva, she was a member of the
Capitoline triad of deities traditionally
introduced by the Etruscan kings. Juno's
symbols are the peacock, the cuckoo and
the cow – animals she considered sacred
– and her chariot is pulled by peacocks
instead of horses.


GREEKS ROMANS

God of the Sea

Poseidon is the god of the sea and
waters, as well as of horses and
earthquakes. This is why so many temples
are dedicated to him both along the
coasts and inland. On fountains Poseidon
is often depicted as a formidable man
with a wild beard, sometimes with his
companions, the Tritons, which are fish
with human torsos.
Neptune, Latin Neptunus, in Roman
religion, originally the god of fresh water;
by 399 BCE he was identified with the
Greek Poseidon and thus became a deity
of the sea. His female counterpart,
Salacia, was perhaps originally a goddess
of leaping springwater, subsequently
equated with the Greek Amphitrite.

Goddess of Love
and Beauty

Aphrodite, ancient Greek goddess of Venus, ancient Italian goddess associated

sexual love and beauty, identified with
Venus by the Romans. The Greek word
aphros means “foam,” and Hesiod relates
in his Theogony that Aphrodite was born
from the white foam produced by the
severed genitals of Uranus (Heaven), after
his son Cronus threw them into the sea.
Aphrodite was, in fact, widely
worshipped as a goddess of the sea and
of seafaring; she was also honoured as a
goddess of war, especially at Sparta,
Thebes, Cyprus, and other places.
with cultivated fields and gardens and
later identified by the Romans with the
Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. Venus
had no worship in Rome in early times, as
the scholar Marcus Terentius Varro (116–27
BCE) shows, attesting that he could find
no mention of her name in old records.
This is corroborated by the absence of
any festival for her in the oldest Roman
calendar and by her lack of a flamen
(special priest).

GREEKS
Goddess of Wisdom
Athena was the goddess of battle
strategy, and wisdom. Identified in the
Roman mythology as the goddess
Minerva. She was always accompanied by
her owl and the goddess of victory, Nike.
Also known as Pallas Athena, she wore a
breastplate made out of goatskin called
the Aegis, which was given to her by her
father, Zeus.
God of the Sun
Apollo is one of the Olympian deities in
classical Greek and Roman religion and
Greek and Roman mythology. The national
divinity of the Greeks, Apollo has been
recognized as a god of archery, music
and dance, truth and prophecy, healing
and diseases, the Sun and light, poetry,
and more. One of the most important and
complex of the Greek gods, he is the son
of Zeus and Leto, and the twin brother of
Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Medicine
and healing are associated with Apollo.
ROMANS
Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom,
justice, law, victory, and the sponsor of
arts, trade, and strategy. Minerva is not a
patron of violence such as Mars, but of
strategic war. From the second century
BC onward, the Romans equated her with
the Greek goddess Athena.
Apollo was one of the twelve Olympian
gods in Greek mythology and because the
Romans had no equivalent Latin name of
the Greek god, they referred to their god
as Apollo. Apollo was the child of Jupiter,
the king of all gods, and Leto, a Greek
Titan. His twin sister was Diana, the
Roman counterpart to the Greek Artemis.
Among others, his half siblings included
Mars, Vulcan, and Juventus. Youthful and
lusty, Apollo took lovers both female and
male.
