Seven Pillars of Basic Ecclesial Community

September 11, 2022 | St. Vincent de Paul Hall
Leader (L): Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
Response (R): And kindle in them the fire of your love.
L: Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
R: And You shall renew the face of the earth.

All: O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the

hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we

may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through

Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Latin America, a frontrunner in localizing Vatican II,
produced its path-breaking Medellin documents;
Africa with its Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of
Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) documents; and
Asia with the Federation of Asian Bishops Conference
(FABC) document Evangelization in Modern Day Asia.

VATICAN II
The Church in the Philippines came out with its own
pertinent document — one of the youngest of the
family of pastorally oriented documents — formed at
the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines in 1991.
The document is now known as The Acts and Decrees
of PCP II.

PCP II
The Second Plenary Council of
the Philippines (PCP II)

Convened on January 20, 1991

- 26 years after the last
session of Vatican II.
Presided by Archbishop
Leonardo Z. Legaspi, OP.

PCP II
Our vision of the Church as communion, participation,
and mission, about the Church as priestly, prophetic
and kingly people, and as a Church of the Poor — a
Church that is renewed — is today finding expression
in one ecclesial movement. This is the movement to
foster Basic Ecclesial Communities (PCP II, 137).

PCP II
BASIC
"At the base" of the Church.
The poor:
- feel in a stronger way the need for
community;
- more open to participation because
more pressed by common needs;
- more sensitive to the gift because
they realize their personal and
societal needs.

BASIC ECCLESIAL COMMUNITY

ECCLESIAL
Unity in and of faith and the
linkage to the institutional
Church.
Word of God and biblical-
prayer sharing.

BASIC ECCLESIAL COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY
Christian life which is
deliberately in contrast with
the individualistic, self-
interested, and competitive
approach to ordinary life so
inherent in the modern-
contemporary culture.

BASIC ECCLESIAL COMMUNITY

They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the

communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. All who

believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell

their property and possessions and divide them among all according

to each one’s need. - Acts 2:42,44,45
