Deep into darkness

In this text we have an explanation of what is the feeling in the caves.

We have a tour with Stephen Alvarez, he travels around the world and he has explored and
photographed a lot of caves, also he has photographed the longest cave called Mammoth Cave in the
USA.

Alvarez says that caving is dangerous, especially when you don’t what you are doing. And he always goes
in cave with other cavers, never by himself.Serious cavers must have the right equipment. They must
wear a helmet for protection. They use knee pads and gloves too.And most of them use headlamps to
light the way, they also use torches sometimes and ropes.

In caves we can see a lot of fantastic shapes. These shapes are called decorations and they are formed
when rainwater drips onto limestone.

But beautiful decorations are not all we can see in caves. There are an animals too. Many of them have
no eyes, they are blind.Alvarez has seen eyeless fish and spiders, and because they can’t see they have a
highly developed sense of hearing, smeel or touch. And they can catch the food without ever seeing the
victim!

Alvarez know how important it is to protect caves.Pollution and human visitors are threats. And that’s
why the cavers have right motto for caves.
