Public Service Announcement for Emerging Adults

Attention everyone, this is a public service announcement (PSA) to help all older adults

to recognize emerging adulthood. Emerging adulthood is a stage that ranges between 18-29

years, where most youths are starting to understand themselves and prepare for the future.

Professor Jeffrey Arnett addressed this period as an in-between stage, where an individual

transforms to gaining independence (Arnett, 2015). The phase is characterized by increased

levels of education and a change of attitudes concerning life. The clinical psychologist Jay in her

ted talk stated that this stage is a transformative stage, where an individual focuses on exploring

careers, personal relationships, finances, and their journey into marriage. Jay further asserts that

the brain of the emerging adults goes through several developments, which affect the rest of their

adulthoods. For example, in her presentation, Mega addressed how if a youth postpones

everything to thirty years, they will not be able to achieve everything because of a lot of

pressure. "Your twenties are the period of gaining identity capital" (Jay, 2013). These changes

make the emerging adults lie under Erikson's Intimacy vs. isolation phase of development. The

views of Mega contradict David Setran on emerging adults. David associates the emerging adult

with a general board game in his talk. He claims that in life, there are several ways that a player

must decide to take (Setran, 2016). It is a phase where an individual learns to survive for what

they value. Through these views from educative people, emerging adulthood is a period of

endless transformation.

All three speakers did an excellent job of explaining the struggles that emerging adults

undergo. However, according to my analysis, Meg Jay did an excellent job in his ted talk. Mega

focused on how individuals' life changes during their twenties, as exploration occurs in this

stage. The most powerful advice that I found helpful is identity development. Currently, our
3

cultures have changed to the perception that genetic gender identity is a decision. The cultures

are based on that we can choose an identity as we choose roles. The issue with this perception is

that biological identity cannot be changed. And once people understand these changes in the

body of the adolescents, spirit, and mind, we can help them to develop in every phase. Therefore,

it is not essential to be well-defined by what you never did.
