Name: Kathlein Ryle R. Siscar Remarks:

Strand: STEM1A Date: March 16, 2022

Direction: Sketch the graph of a function 𝑓 with the following properties.

▪ lim 𝑓 (𝑥) = − ∞
𝑥→−∞

▪ lim 𝑓 (𝑥) = 2, but 𝑓 (−2) = 4

𝑥→−2

▪ lim 𝑓 (𝑥) = 3, lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) = 4, and 𝑓 (−1) = 3

𝑥→−1− 𝑥→−1

▪ lim 𝑓(𝑥) = − ∞
𝑥→2

▪ lim 𝑓 (𝑥) = 5 Y
𝑥→+∞

X
Identify the type of discontinuity at:
1. 𝑥 = −2 –> Removable Discontinuity
2. 𝑥 = −1 –> Jump Discontinuity
3. 𝑥 = 2 –> Asymptotic/ Infinite Discontinuity

Direction: Find the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏 that make 𝑓(𝑥) continuous for all values of 𝑥.
Show and explain your solution in the space provided.

𝑎𝑒 𝑥 + 2𝑏 − 1, 𝑥≤0
2
𝑓(𝑥 ) = {𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 3𝑏, 0 < 𝑥 ≤ 1
2𝑎 𝑥 + 7𝑏𝑥, 𝑥>1

>In order to make f(x) continuous for all values of x, the one-sided limits for x = 0 and 1
must be equal along with the value of function.

𝑨𝒕 𝒙 = 𝟎

First, check the value of function or the value of f (0) by changing every x in the
equation as 0:
𝑓 (0) = 𝑎𝑒𝑥 + 2𝑏 − 1 = 𝑎𝑒0 + 2𝑏 − 1
= 𝑎 + 2𝑏 − 1
Next solve for the right-hand limit. The x for right-hand limit is close or greater than
0, therefore, the middle equation in the piecewise will be used:
lim+ 𝑓 (𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 3𝑏 = 𝑎 (0)2 + 𝑏 (0) + 3𝑏
𝑥→0
= 3𝑏

Then solve for the left-hand limit as well (which is also the same with the value of
function). Since we are looking for the left-hand limit, the value of x is less than 0, so
the first equation in the piecewise will be used:
Lim− 𝑓 (𝑥) = 𝑎𝑒𝑥 + 2𝑏 − 1 = 𝑎𝑒(0) + 2𝑏 − 1
𝑥→0
= 𝑎 + 2𝑏 − 1

In order to make it continuous at x=0, the value of function and the one-sided limits
must be equal to each other. And since the value of function and the left-hand limit
is already the same, we only need to make the one-sided limits equal.

lim 𝑓 (𝑥) = lim− 𝑓 (𝑥)

𝑥→0+ 𝑥→0
3𝑏 = 𝑎 + 2𝑏 − 1
𝑎 − 𝑏 = 1 – first equation

𝑨𝒕 𝒙 = 𝟏
The same process as earlier will be done. Check the value of function first by
changing every x in the equation as 1.
𝑓 (1) = 𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 3𝑏 = 𝑎(1)2 + 𝑏(1) + 3𝑏
= 𝑎 + 4𝑏

Now solve for the right-hand limit using the third equation:
lim+ 𝑓 (𝑥) = 2𝑎𝑥 + 7𝑏𝑥 = 2𝑎1 + 7𝑏(1)
𝑥→1
= 2𝑎 + 7𝑏

Next, solve the left-hand limit using the middle equation:

lim− 𝑓 (𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 3𝑏 = 𝑎(1)2 + 𝑏(1) + 3𝑏
𝑥→1
= 𝑎 + 4𝑏

In order to make it continuous at x=1, the value of function and the one-sided limits
must be equal to each other. The value of function and the left-hand limit is equal so
consider it as one and make the one-sided limits equal.
Lim+ 𝑓 (𝑥) = lim− 𝑓 (𝑥)
𝑥→1 𝑥→1
2𝑎 + 7𝑏 = 𝑎 + 4𝑏 – second equation

>Now that we have two equations, we can now obtain the value of a by using the
second equation and simplifying it first:
2𝑎 + 7𝑏 = 𝑎 + 4𝑏
2𝑎 − 𝑎 = 4𝑏 − 7𝑏
𝒂 = −𝟑𝒃
After done simplifying, substitute the value of a to the first equation:
𝑎 = −3𝑏
𝑎−𝑏 =1
(−3𝑏) − 𝑏 = 1
−4𝑏 1
=
−4 −4
𝟏
𝒃=−
𝟒

Now that we know the value of b, we can proceed to getting the value of a by the
process of substitution as well.

𝑎−𝑏 =1

𝑎 − (− ) = 1

𝑎+ =1

>Therefore, in order to make 𝒇(𝒙) continuous for all values of 𝒙, the value of a must
