purpose if the consumers are not going to benefit
but only be taken advantage of by the rich. Even
the private bus operators have now taken advan-
tage of the petrol price decrease and having a field
day.
Private bus operators have been having their own
way for too long. They have often held the public to
ransom by threatening strikes at the drop of a hat.
Private bus operators have increased fares every
time fuel prices were jacked up. They are now refus-
ing to offer the benefit to the public when fuel prices
have been slashed.
The talk of the increase in the cost of spare parts is
only an afterthought to wriggle out of the situation.
It is useless if the Government offers concessions to
the public by way of reducing fuel prices, if busi-
nesses fail to follow suit. Hence, the Government
should devise a mechanism to ensure that the pub-
lic is not cheated in this fashion. The Consumer
Affairs Authority (CAA) should ensure that the con-
sumer is not fleeced. Unfortunately, the CAA has
been rendered impotent and reduced to a mere
nameboard though maintained by taxpayers. The
CAA is a fine example of the kind of white elephant
that the country is burdened with, bleeding the
economy white. The CAA should be made fully
operational or shut down altogether. The public is no
longer in a position to do charity.
