Cutting and safety ?!

HSE / LEAN 1 August 2003 HSE 00
Do’s and Don’ts

Do:
1. Put workers safety first before making and change.
2. Position workers with their basks to the aisle to allow an escape path.
3. Allow for more short breaks, so workers can adequately rest.
4. Ensure that there is enough space left for maintenance access, when
machines are “back to back”.
5. Mark locations of each machine on the floor; ensure wheels are lockable
and locked.
6. Provide standing operators with rubber underfoot matting or a support
stand.
7. Follow the luminance levels recommended in HSE guideline. For low
light areas, local lighting must be applied.
8. Provide seated operators with height adjustable chairs, with reasonable
cushioning and back support.
9. Discuss and communicate all alterations and layout changes with the
workers – prior to making any changes.
10. Provide more relief (floating) employees to release workers who need to
urgently leave their work station.
11. If in doubt DO discuss you problem or situation with the SEA Team.

Do’s and Don’ts

Don’t:
1. Block fire points, emergency exits, or first aid stations,
2. Have operators rotate more than 90 degrees to either pick up or put
down product.
3. Lay utility lines (air, power, water) in an untidy or haphazard way; avoid
tripping hazards.
4. Use whistles, bells, or other audible systems to control the timing of the
product flow. Lights or count down devices may only be used in the
training period. Once the line is in sync any form of signal must be
removed.
5. Create overcrowded product lines or cells, allow sufficient space so that
employees can move freely to avoid accident.
6. Harass or pressure slow workers.
