REVIEW 1

1. What is the Systems Principle of Materials Handling? Please suggest few examples of MHS?

2. What are the general characteristics of conveyors?

3. What are the functions of AGV in the warehouse?

Exercise 1
Please select materials handling equipment for movement the product boxes from production factory
to the supermarket (Name of equipment, the operation of equipment)

Exercise 2 What is Unit load? Design the unit load of the drinking water bottles to place it on the
pallet as shown.

Exercise 3
To design the products to be palletized in the sequence as shown below:

a) Design the unit load (how many bottles per carton container, bottle layout, and outer size of the
carton).
b) To load the unit load onto pallet. Note: the pallet size must be according to standard
Recommend what Material handling equipment to use to move the container to the truck trailer

Exercise 4
Consider the AGVs layout in figure. Vehicles travel counterclockwise around the loop to deliver loads
from the load station to the unload station. Loading time = 0.70 min and unloading time = 0.65 min.
The following performance parameters are given: Vehicle velocity: 50m/min. Availability: 0.95.
Traffic factor: 0.90. Worker efficiency: 0.97. The total of 50 deliveries/hour must be completed by the
AGVs.
Determine:
a) Ideal delivery cycle time
b) Number of vehicles required to satisfy the delivery demand.
c) Number of vehicles required if Vehicles travel clockwise around the loop.
Exercise 5
A roller conveyor moves tote pans in one direction at 320 ft/min between a load station and an unload
station, a distance of 460 ft. With one worker, the time to load parts into a tote pan at the load station
is 6 sec per part. Each tote pan holds 14 parts. In addition, it takes 12 sec to load a tote pan of parts
onto the conveyor. Determine
a) Spacing between tote pan centers flowing in the conveyor system and
b) Flow rate of parts on the conveyor system.

Exercise 6
A recirculating conveyor has a total length of 300 m. Its speed is 65 m/min, the spacing of part and
carriers along its length is 10 m. Each carrier can hold two parts. The task time required to load two
parts into each carrier is 0.12 min and the unload time is the same. The required loading and unloading
rates are both defined by the specified flow rate, which is 7 parts/min. Evaluate the conveyor system
design with respect to Kwo,s three principles (Speed Rule and Capacity Constraint).

Exercise 7
Consider the AGVs layout in figure. Vehicles travel counterclockwise around the loop to deliver loads
from the load station to the unload station. Loading time = 0.75 min and unloading time = 0.65 min.
The following performance parameters are given: Vehicle velocity: 45m/min. Availability: 0.95.
Traffic factor: 0.90. Worker efficiency: 0.98. The total of 50 deliveries/hour must be completed by the
AGVs.
Determine:
a) Ideal delivery cycle time
b) Number of vehicles required to satisfy the delivery demand?

Exercise 8
An AGVS has an average loaded travel distance per delivery = 400 ft. The average empty travel
distance is not known. Required number of deliveries per hour = 60. Load and unload times are each
0.6 min and the AGV speed = 125 ft/min. Anticipated traffic factor = 0.80. Availability = 0.95. Develop
an equation that relates the number of vehicles required to operate the system as a function of the
average empty travel distance Le.

Exercise 9
A recirculating conveyor has a total length of 300 m. Its speed is 65 m/min, the spacing of part and
carriers along its length is 10 m. Each carrier can hold two parts. The task time required to load two
parts into each carrier is 0.12 min and the unload time is the same. The required loading and unloading
rates are both defined by the specified flow rate, which is 7 parts/min. Evaluate the conveyor system
design with respect to Kwo,s three principles (Speed Rule and Capacity Constraint).

Exercise 10
An AGVS will be used to satisfy the material flows in the from-to chart below, which shows delivery
rates between stations (part/hr, above the slash) and distances between stations (m, below the slash).
Moves indicated by "L" are trips in which the vehicle is loaded, while ,”E,” indicates moves in which
the vehicle is empty. It is assumed that availability : 0.90, traffic factor : 0.85, and efficiency : 1.0.
Speed of an AGV : 0.9 m/sec. If load handling time per delivery cycle : 1.0 min (load : 0.5 min and
unload : 0.5 min), how many vehicles are needed to satisfy the indicated deliveries per hour?

Exercise 11
The roller conveyor has a length of 100 meters. Conveyor speed is 10 meters per minute. All parts are
loaded at the load station and unloaded at the unload station. Each container holds 15 parts. With one
worker, the time to load parts into a container at the load station is 5 seconds per part. It takes 12
seconds to load a container onto the conveyor. It takes 1 minute to unload at the unload station.
Determine:
(a) The center-to-center distance between containers.
(b) The maximum number of containers on the conveyor at one time.
(c) The hourly flow rate of parts.
(d) When to increase flow rate to 2,000 parts/hr, determine the new:
- Conveyor speed Vc’, (no change the center-to-center distance between containers Sc and
number of parts np)
- Number of parts np’, (no change the center-to-center distance between containers Sc and
conveyor speed)
- Which one you choose to change, conveyor speed or number of parts? Why?
