What is carrier aggregation?

④ ●Two carriers over one modem RF connector ①
●Two carriers over one radio cable ②
V
●Two carriers over one radio unit ③
H
Adjacent or non-adjacent channels ●Two carriers over one polarization ④

Doubled capacity and carriers

① without footprint increase

Multi-carrier
Scattered spectrum

Carrier aggregation

Why carrier aggregation?
Powerful feature to enable 5G capacity within traditional frequencies

●Double the capacity

●Without expanding existing outdoor configuration
●When wider channels are not available
●Scalable expansion, also with SW reconfiguration only
●Minimized outdoor installation
●Two carriers in one radio unit and a single radio cable
●Less equipment, footprint, weight and wind load
●Outdoor redundancy and
Graceful degradation for 4+0 configurations
●Reduced radio power consumption, almost 50%
(1x MINI-LINK 6365 vs 2x MINI-LINK 6363)

≤1.4 Gbps ≤2.5 Gbps ≤5 Gbps

Some things to consider when planning
for carrier aggregation
●The importance of system gain, also in higher modulations
●Typically 6 dB lower output power with carrier aggregation,
but no impact on receiver threshold
●Comparable to using power splitters
●Both channels must fit within the radio sub-band
●Maximum channel spacing vs frequency band
●6, 7/8 and 13 GHz
2x 28 – 60 MHz
●10/11 and 15 – 42 GHz
2x 28 – 112 MHz
*Adjacent for 11 GHz
