Opening Rites
Leader: Lord, Jesus Christ, while we are gathered here
today to reflect on the paschal mystery, obtain for us the
grace to despise sin in the same way that you did and
help us spend our lives serving others according to your
example. Thus, we may share not just your sufferings but
also your resurrection. You who live and reign forever and
ever.

First Station: The Last Supper

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians.
The Lord Jesus on the night that he was delivered up,
took bread and, after giving thanks, broke it, saying, “This
is my body which is broken for you, do this in memory of
me.” In the same manner, taking the cup after the supper,
he said, “This cup is the new Covenant in my blood.
Whenever you drink it, do it in memory of me.” So, then,
whenever you eat of this bread and drink of this cup, you
are proclaiming the death of the Lord until he comes.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, you loved us very much. You loved us until the
end. You remained in the Eucharist to be the food that
gives eternal life. Stay in our midst to remind us that God
continues to redeem us until the last moments of our
lives.
Forgive us, O Lord during those times when we have
forsaken your offering of life and love to us especially in
the Holy Eucharist.
Second Station: The Agony of Jesus in
the
Garden

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
After this, Jesus left to go as usual to Mount Olives and
the disciples followed him. When he came to the place,
he told them, “Pray that you may not be put to the test.”
Then he went a little farther, about a stone’s throw, and
kneeling down he prayed, “Father, if it is your will, remove
this cup from me, yes not my will yours be done.” And an
angel from heaven appeared to give him strength. As he
was in agony, he prayed even more earnestly and great
drops of blood formed like sweat and fell on the ground.
When he rose from prayer, he went to his disciples but
found them worn out by their grief, and asleep.

Prayer
That night was long and dreary, Lord. Not one of your
disciples dared to be with you in your suffering. Your only
strength is your strong determination to do the will of the
Father, no matter what the cost.
You continued to suffer alone even up to the present, you
grieved for the loss of friends, for our home, with no
bright future. Our community is troubled by these
miseries, but we continue to be unmindful of them, while
there are many who become victims of our negligence.
Third Station: Jesus faces the Sanhedrin

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark.
The High Priest then stood up in the midst of them and
asked Jesus, “Have you no answer at all? What of this
evidence against you?” But Jesus was silent and made no
reply. The High Priest put a second question to him, “Are
you Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” Then Jesus
answered, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated
at the right hand of the most Powerful and coming with
clouds of heaven around him.” The High Priest tore his
clothes to show his horror and said, “What more
evidence do we need? You have just heard his
blasphemous words. What is your decision?” And they all
condemned Jesus, “He must die.”
Early in the morning, the chief priests, the elders and the
teachers of the Law had their plan ready. They put Jesus
in chains, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

Lord, Jesus Christ, you are the judge of the whole
mankind, but you accepted a sentence given you that is
unjust. You are most holy, the only one on earth without
stain of sin, who endured all cruel accusations.
There is still an unjust system that is repeated every time
one judges unfairly where an innocent soul is sentenced
and a criminal is freed. You stood as a victim of these
merciless justices, and this is experienced by those who
are weak and have no strength to defend themselves, and
have no voice in society. For them you continue to live
and suffer.
Fourth Station: The scourging and
crowning
with thorns

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Pilate said to them, “And what shall I do with Jesus called
the Christ?” All answered, “Crucify him!” Pilate insisted.
“What evil has he done?” But they shouted louder,
“Crucify him!” Then Pilate set Barabbas free, but had
Jesus scourged, and handed him over to be crucified.
The Roman soldiers took Jesus into the Palace of the
governor and the whole troop gathered around him. They
stripped him and dressed him in a purple military cloak.
Then twisting a crown of thorns, they forced it onto his
head, and placed a reed in his right hand. They knelt
before Jesus and mocked him saying, “Long life to the
King of the Jews!”

Prayer
Loving Jesus, you were betrayed by those people who
you’ve felt compassion for. And having been influenced
by your enemies they mocked you and put you to death.
Pilate never thought and defended your innocence and
disregarded a just system. Those foolish Roman soldiers
took turns in scourging your sacred body and crowned
you with thorns. But you never complained at all. You
endured all those sufferings like a sheep to be
slaughtered; you were like those who were victimized and
abused by ruthless people while many of us are
unmindful of a cruel and unjust system.
Fifth Station: Jesus accepts his cross

When they had finished mocking him, they pulled the
purple cloak off and dressed him in his own clothes again,
and led him to be crucified.

Prayer
Dear Lord, you bore the punishment of the cross intended
for rebels and criminals. Who would believe that this
would be laden on the shoulders of the Son of God who is
filled with goodness and holiness? Inspite of all, you
accepted it with humility because you know that this is
the only way that we can be saved from eternal
punishment. The cross of weakness, of our despair, of our
rejection and of our bad actions. Even up to this day,
innocent men, women and children bear the cross of
greed, pride and lust.
Sixth Station: Jesus falls because of the
heavy
cross
Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we thank you.
All: Because by your Holy Cross,

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark.
While Jesus walked going to the Calvary, his body was
nearly crushed by the heavy cross. But most of all, he was
mocked and insulted by the people as if he is a criminal.
He almost succumbed to extreme fatigue because of lack
of sleep and scourging he received. Jesus fell to the
ground because of the heavy cross and the continuous
mocking of the people.

Prayer
The Calvary is not far from the praetorium – a few meters
only. But it took you so long, O Lord, to reach the place
overwhelmingly tired, and discouraged, because nobody
helped you. Your strength had long vanished. The road
was so rough. The people were so cruel. The cross
became heavier and heavier until you could not endure it
anymore, and you fell to the ground!
Like you, Lord, there are many of us who also fell on our
face flat on the ground, along the crooked path of the
cross of life, for the many trials and rejections that tore
us. When we stumble and fall, Lord, come to our rescue!
And if we no longer can bear, the many trials that come
our way, Lord, obtain for us a compassionate heart, that
we may not be a burden to others.
Seventh Station: Simon helps Jesus carry
his
cross

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark.
They met a farmer, Simon of Cyrene, the father of
Alexander and Rufus. They forced him to carry the cross
of Jesus.
Reflection
Prayer
Simon just passed by, while on his way home from the
farm. He was forced to change his path, a change that
made a difference in his life. He was forced to carry your
cross. He was also a victim of poverty and injustice. He
experienced your pain, Lord, which is why he discovered
that life can only be meaningful, if there is willingness to
share one’s time and effort to others.
Lord, send more people like Simon of Cyrene. Give us
those who have the courage to carry other’s burden in
the spirit of sacrifice and brotherhood. Make us like
Simon, Lord. Obtain for us the strength and willingness to
be charitable to each other because there are many
suffering Christs around us who cannot bear any longer
the weight of their own crosses, which vary in shape and
sizes.
Eight Station: Jesus meets the women of
Jerusalem

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
A large crowd of people followed him; among them were
women beating their breasts and waiting for him. Jesus
turned to them and said, “Women of Jerusalem, do not
weep for me, weep rather for your children. For the days
are coming when people will say, “Happy are the women
without child!” And they will say to the mountains; “Fall
on us!” And to the hills; “Cover us!” For if this is the lot of
the green wood, what will happen to the dry?”

Lord Jesus, the women of Jerusalem grieved so much for
you. They followed you on your way to Calvary. But you
told them the cause of their lack of repentance. May we
also imitate them in our atonement for our sins which
caused you so much grief and pain. And may we also look
down with mercy on our suffering brothers and sisters –
especially those in the slum areas, the unemployed, the
homeless, the victims of injustice and abuse. All these
sins brought God’s punishment on our society.
Ninth Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross

All: Because by your Holy Cross,

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
Along with Jesus, two others who were criminals were led
out to be executed. There at the place called the Skull, he
was crucified together with the criminals – one on his
right and another on his left. Jesus said, “Father forgive
them for they do not know what they do.” And the guards
cast lots to divide his clothes among themselves.
The people stood watching. As for the rulers, they made
fun of him, saying to one another. “Let the man who
saved others now save himself, for he is the Messiah, the
chosen one of God!”

Prayer
Your hands, Lord, that used to play with children, heal the
sick, and drive out evil spirits, are nailed on the cross;
your feet that brought you to many towns to preach the
Good News to all are nailed to the cross too. Your
enemies challenge you to come down from the cross. But
you did not pay attention to their insults. You suffered out
of love for sinners and not because you were crucified. It
was love that brought you there. And it was also love that
you remained there. Obtain for us, O Lord, the grace to
fulfill our duties and obligations in the spirit of love, even
if these will bring us pain, just like being crucified on the
cross.
Tenth Station: The repentant thief
Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we thank you.
All: Because by your Holy Cross,
you have redeemed the world
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
One of the criminals hanging with Jesus insulted him, “So
you are the messiah? Save yourself and us as well!” But
the other rebuked him saying, “Have you no fear of God?
You received the same sentence as he did, We deserve
the punishment: this is the payment of what we have
done. But this man has done no evil.” Turning to Jesus he
said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your
Kingdom.” Jesus replied, “Truly, you will be with me today
in paradise.”

Prayer
Lord Jesus, you cannot refuse the contrite heart of a
sinner who humbles himself in front of many, who speaks
to you full of faith and trust, who believes in your
kingdom. You did not forsake him, Lord.
Many times, we encounter people who have faltered and
wish to renew and change their lives. Grant us, Lord, that
we may welcome these people, in the same manner that
you opened your arms to the repentant thief. In this way,
we will depart from this world with a heart filled with
faith and trust, like the repentant thief, and anticipate
your promise of everlasting life.
Eleventh Station: The Virgin Mary and
John at
the foot of the
cross

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s
sister, Mary who was the wife of Cleophas, and Mary
Magdalene. When Jesus saw his Mother, and his disciple,
he said to his mother, “Woman, this is your son.” Then he
said to the disciple, “There is your mother.” And from that
moment the disciple took her to his own home.

Prayer
As the prophet Simeon said, “a sword of suffering shall
pierce your heart.” At Calvary, Mary experienced the
fulfillment of this prophesy. And she uttered silently in
heart, “Be it done unto me according to your word.”
Your sorrowful mother, Lord, had loved you so dearly,
more than any person in the world. And you also loved
her more than anyone else on earth. She stood at your
side, witnessing and partaking all your pains and
sufferings to save the world. You made her life on earth
more fruitful, by entrusting her to your apostle John; by
entrusting John to her, you brought peace and joy into
our lives, because you gave us all to your mother, who is
also our mother.
Twelfth Station: Jesus dies on the cross

With that Jesus knew that all was now finished and he
said, “I am thirsty,” as it is written in Scripture. A jar full of
bitter wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in
the wine on a hyssop stalk, they raised it to his lips. Jesus
took the wine and said, “It is accomplished.” It was now
about noon, the sun was hiding and darkness came over
the whole land until mid-afternoon; and at that time the
curtain of the Sanctuary was torn in two. Then Jesus gave
a loud cry, “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.”
And saying that, he gave up his spirit.

Prayer
We are all sentenced to die, O Lord, because of our sins.
And yet you took these punishments of ours, you, who do
not deserve to be punished at all. Your life, O Lord, is the
only one you had but you offered it freely for us, for our
salvation and our share in your life everlasting. You died
because of our sins, because of your deep love for us.
You uttered, “I thirst.” You thirsted for love, before you
breathed your last. Accept our atonement and love for
you, O Lord. We want to show you how much we love you
for the sake of those who refuse to love you.
We pray that at the end of our earthly life, we will die,
trusting and uttering your words, “Father, into your hands
we commend our spirits.
Thirteenth Station: Jesus is buried in the
tomb

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
It was now evening and there arrived a wealthy man from
Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of
Jesus, and the governor ordered that the body be given to
him. So Joseph took the body of Jesus, wrapped it in a
clean linen sheet and laid it in his own new tomb which
has been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone
across the entrance of the tomb and left.

Lord Jesus, you were surrounded by the shadow of death.
The tender love of your Mother served as the only light in
the dark hours of your death. The faithfulness of Apostle
John and the friendship of Joseph of Arimathea made this
light shine all the more. You were laid in the tomb like
riches hidden in a chest, like a seed planted on the soil.
Your death gave meaning and hope to our death. Thanks
be to you, this has become a peaceful rest in the arms of
Mother Earth, that awaits the dawn of the glorious
resurrection, that will destroy all the obstacles of death
now and forever.
Fourteenth Station: Jesus rises from the
dead

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was
dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to
visit the tomb. And behold, there was a violent
earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from
heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon
it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was
white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him
and became like dead men. Then the angel said to the
women in reply, “Do not be afraid, I know that you are
seeking for Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has
been raised just as he said. Come and see the place
where they lay him.”

Prayer
Jesus, your holy body which was laid in the tomb will
never suffer pain again. Your glorious resurrection can
never be stopped even inside the sepulcher. The big stone
that locked the sepulcher and was rolled proved strongly
that your resurrection was indeed true. It also bore
witness to the truth that someday, we will also rise from
the dead.
Your rising from the dead, Lord, is the cornerstone of our
resurrection , even up to now. This will serve as a
challenge to us to rise up from the death brought by sin
towards everlasting life.

Leader: Almighty and eternal God, your only begotten
