BELT CONVEYOR
1. SCOPE
This DTS specifies the functional and operational criteria applicable to belt conveyor used for continuous handling loose
bulk material or bags transportation.
Belt conveyor equipment includes, but is not limited to, the below components:
• The belt
• The pulleys
• The idlers
• The drive system
• The safety devices
• Belt cleaners (if needed)
• Belt alignment devices
Weigh-feeders are excluded.

BELT CONVEYOR
3. FUNCTIONAL CRITERIA
NOTE: These criteria are related both to one-way and two-way belt conveyor.

Criteria associated to function Unit or # Limit

Safety factor of belt breaking load for one-way conveyor # 8
To be agreed with supplier,
Safety factor of belt breaking load for two-way conveyor #
at least same as one-way,
Pulley shaft nominal Von Mises stress
MPa Re/5
(Re: Yield strength of material)
Application factor (KA) for reducer according to ISO 6336-1 According to DTS.RD.ME 1.35
Application factor to calculate the operating power
based on the maximum cross-sectional area of material # 1,1
(according to ISO 5048
Belt filling ratio
% 75
based on the maximum cross-sectional area of the material
Minimum take-up travel of tensioning system % >2
based on centre distance length
Minimum clearance under return strand mm > 600
Minimum access all around head and tail terminals mm > 800

4. OPERATIONAL CRITERIA

• For heavy load or impact at feeding zone, shock absorber idlers or slider bed is required on loading area
• Belt "soft" start (for example: fluid coupling or VSD) should be install to increase belt life time
• Guide rollers on self aligning idlers shall be installed, every 50m

SAFETY
• Shall comply with the local safety regulation
• Shall comply with the LAFARGE “Safety Requirements for Design Engineering”
• Shall comply with the LAFARGE Division Technical Standard for Safety for Belt Conveyors
• If the local regulation are different than specified in the Safety Requirements, then the more stringent
condition shall prevail
• The conveyors shall have a walkway on each side, with hand rails, when the access is not possible from
ground floor
• The conveyor shall have a safety emergency shut-down pull rope on each side

MAINTAINABILITY

• Anti-reverse is required for uphill slope

• For down hill slope a slow down system is required and also a brake to keep the conveyor in position
• Access on both sides of the conveyor shall be provided
• Access must be provided for belt replacement, vulcanizing and replacement of components
• Doors (610 mm square if possible according to belt size) on discharge chute to inspect and clean head pulley, belt and belt
cleaners shall be provided
• Lubrication system and safety guards that allows the lubrication of all bearings while the conveyor is running
shall be provided
• Lifting beam is required for the maintenance of the conveyors drive if the motor or gearbox weight is above
50 daN, shall be provided
