KARATE
There are dozens of different martial arts, found all throughout the world. Within those arts, there can be
further variations. Karate is one of the most popular arts to train worldwide, and there are four main styles
within this art. Here, we take a quick look at them, and what makes them uniques!

CONCEPT NOTES
Karate is a martial art that became recognized in Japan during 17 th century. Gichin
Funakoshi is credited as being the father of modern karate. Like many other forms
of modern karate. Like many other forms of martial arts, karate focuses on a belt
ranking system, mental strength, coordination and respect. Karate literally,
translates to “empty hand” – rather than using manmade weapons, students of
karate are taught that their bodies are weapons. They learn a variety of kicks and
punches, as well as blocks for defensive positions.

II. EXERCISE
Directions: Right after learning and understanding the different concepts and types of unarmed self-defense,
it is about time to test what you have learned.
On another sheet of paper/learning activity sheet, create a comic strip with a scenario/situation
that shows the use of unarmed self-defense in one’s life. Refer to the rubric provided on page 5
for the grading of your work.

CONCEPT NOTES
ARMED SELF-DEFENSE - ARNIS
Arnis – is the Philippine indigenous martial art, most popularly known as stick-fighting. Rattan sticks are
used for practice, but the martial art is a complete system of armed and unarmed combat. Arnis is popular
throughout the world as Kali or Eskrima, or Filipino Martial Art (FMA).
Three popular modes of Arnis:
1. Solo baston (single stick)
2. Doble baston (two sticks)
3. Espada y daga (Spanish term for sword and dagger)

Arnis is characterized by three aspects:


1. Basic self-defense
2. Cultural or forms
3. Competitive or sports

the lessons on pages 67-68; 108)
